Question DaVinci, Wallson, PI Clay

Some time ago, I purchased a set of "Pyramids Casino" chips from chipsandgames.com. These are basically the same as the Wallson/DaVinci/PI Clay/Progen 80. I got these chips for 34¢ per chip at the sale price. I had samples of the chips and they blew me away! Like many others, I have limited resources but excellent taste. This leaves me drooling over Paulsons and casino chips but I just can't afford them. I had to sell my set of Mardi Gras clays for financial reasons (sob) but since then I found these and I'm thrilled with them. ZERO spinners, and I found only ONE inlay that was off center (out of 650 chips) but still acceptable.

If anyone else has experience with these type chips, what is your opinion of them, considering the quality/price factor? I have read the hype about how most people cannot distinguish these chips from Paulsons in a blindfold test. Well, I took the test and I could not tell the difference in sound, feel, or stacking. Has anyone else tried this? Now the inlay may not be what I would have designed myself, but chips with stock inlays are usually a compromise anyway. Overall, I think this may be the "sleeper" deal of the decade: compression molded chips with edge spots and inlays for only 34¢ and a fair choice of denoms too.

The yellow ($500) and Orange ($1,000) look fairly close in color on the web-site. Are they easier to distinguish in real life?

Sort of surprised there werent more posts for your thread- but here's some information- I'll try and be as unbiased as I can--

The chip was originally developed with our manufacturer-- the first ones to reach the market were from us and the factory used a mold design VERY similiar to the Blue Chip Flame -- BCC wasnt happy so we advised the factory not to use this mold- and a member of CT- RolandSchoff- did a design called the Great Wall- or interlocking L mold

This is the chip we currently make--

New colors were added by us and are on their way making a total of 10 colors available.

Other importers who also use this manufacturer either copied this mold- or had their own mold made- or used another mold- but there are currently three variations of this chip now on the market.

With the exception of colors and weight- theyre made using the same process with is a modified injection mold machine running higher pressures and some changes which mimick but do not duplicate the way casino chips are made.

Its not a Paulson ASM or BCC by no means- but its a decent chip especially in its price range. We did an independent test using other chips and we received the same results you did- sound- feel- taste on par with other chips in a much higher price range.

We found some QC issues which arent apparent when a label is affixed- we had issues with the solid chips we introduced with slight cracking but this is ALMOST resolved--

Inlay size is 1.103 for our chip- and 1.110 for the Davinci series- I dont have Trademarks chips here but they will invariably be between these measure ments for inlays.

THe chip was made specifically deep enough to accomodate a vinyl AND thick polycarbonate inlay without eddecting stackability.

CHip tolerence is pretty high and spinners have not been seen for the most part- we havnt heard of any reports of spinners.

Color scheme is so-so- primarily because of raw material availability and having to order a large quantity in order to introduce a new color or colors.
Weve gotten the manufacture to loosen quantity restrictions due to a 7 year working relationship with them and also we were their host when they visited the USA- so this enabled 3 addit colors to come out soon without the need for us to order 100,000 per color.

Hope this info helps
Joe

Joe, are these the three you mentioned?
  • Palm Imports 'Great Wall '(aka 'Wallson') - available in both solid and edge spots
  • 'ProGen 80' - available in edge spots only
  • 'Pyramids' (labelled) / 'Casino Da Vinci' (labelled) / or blank - all available in edge spots only

Agreed, they are pretty close in color. That is why I don't use the orange $1000 chips. I couldn't tell you how they look in person, as I don't have any of the orange. I do have the yellows and although yellow is unconventional for a $500 chip, it is a very nice looking chip and contrasts well against the other chips in the set.

Re: DaVinci, Wallson, PI Clay

I was going to post in this thread yesterday, but got distracted by my chips. Go figure.

Kingzilla - I think these are great midrange chips. They are the closest in feel, sound and looks to a clay chip for the price you pay. I doubt you'll be dissapointed.

TX_Kiwi - The pictures on the website don't do a very good job color wise. Based on samples, the colors were actually very distinguishable (yellow and orange). I didn't really like this color choice. So far, the three variations I've seen are the DaVinci's/Pyramids, Progen 80's and the PI Clays.

Joe - Sweet Jesus, news colors. Awesome.

I ordered a set of PI clays blanks from Joe a couple weeks ago. I haven't even got to use them yet. I've been constantly shuffling them, tossing them around, and stacking them in various configurations, but have yet to play a game with them. Damnit.

-Nick

yea- Im not sure if one-two new spinoffs surfaced- Ive seen a 4th mold design in samples we got for the new colors were introducing but I dont know if those are on the market yet-

Are the pyramids and Davinci's the same chip? If not I dont think ive seen the pyramids- so there may be 4 variations on a theme here

Both the Pyramids and Da Vincis are listed with Chipsandgames.com and appear to be the same base chip with a different inlay. They also sell them as a plain blank. All three are on this page:

Poker Chips - Clay Poker Chips

However, anyone with better knowledge should feel free to chime in ....

Joe,
FWIW I think that KingZilla has a real point here - all these (Palm Imports Great Wall, ProGen 80 and Pyramids/Casino Da Vincis) appear to occupy a really good place in the price-features scale. They price up slightly higher than top-end plastics (e.g. Dunes Commems), are equivilent in price with ceramics and undercut the top end clays. The labeled chips are Pr0ntiful and I am sorely tempted.

Can a CTer with good chip manufacturing knowledge coin a generic term for them?
