I was lucky enough to skip the "dice chips" phase. Went straight from interlocking Bicycle chips (the very thin, very light ones) to Nexgen Bees (hot-stamped). That was 2005. Since then, I've sold them (had ~ 1400?) and replaced that "affordable set" (was designed for 30-player tourneys) with a set of custom-labeled PalmImports "Chinese Clay" Solid Walls:
They look and feel 1000% better (hard to tell from a Paulson clay chip), and I was lucky enough to get them as "prototypes" (with some minor defects) for about the same price that my Bees had cost... but of course, I sold the Bees at a pretty significant loss (but had got lots of use out of them). Don't expect a cheap plastic slugged chip to hold its value or anything...
DEFINITELY GET SAMPLES FIRST!
A sample set of Nexgens will only cost you a couple bucks including shipping (or maybe somebody here will send you one for free). Compare it to your dice chips. Then try some of the other options like Desert Palms ("Pure Clay" version) or Dunes Commemoratives, or Casino Royales. And if you want a MUCH better feeling/sounding chip and decide you MUST have a real compression-molded quality clay chip, then consider
BCC T-mold solids or
ASM solids. For one thing, they feel just like a real casino chip. Second, they'll hold their value much better - you'll be able to sell them a few years down the road (if you decide to upgrade further) for close to the same price you paid.
My original decision to get Bees was based on (a) not knowing all my options (look around ChipTalk and you'll find 100's of options at various price levels), and (b) thinking I "couldn't afford" Paulsons. Well, now I own something like 9 sets of chips... and the only plastic slugged chips I own are "Casino Royales" by Carta Mundi... which imho are much nicer than Nexgens.
