44m chip question

Just out of curiousity, why would someone want oversized chips when 39m seems to be the standard size used. I am curious what the attraction is, since I have never seen an oversized chip - thanks

Re: 44m chip question

Because you can.

In all seriousness, most high denom chips in casinos are oversized. It's a status thing (I think).

Re: 44m chip question

To me they are a pain in the ash. They always cost more and I don't think you can get a chip case for them yet. You would have to use a birdcage carrier.

They also don't fit well in the trays you get with poker tables.

Just seems to be another way to get people to buy more chips.

Re: 44m chip question

Oversized chips are usually reserved for higher denominations and for Baccarat tables. Since 39mm is the standard size, as you noted, the oversized chips may be considered special or rare and makes the people using higher denoms and sitting at the full-size baccarat table feel equally "special."

As for home sets, the same idea still applies: 44mms are relatively rare compared to all the 39mm out there, plus they look different and more substantial than the lower denoms (if the 44s are used as higher denoms).

In the case of ASM 44mm, different spot patterns are available that aren't available on the 39s.

There is no greater joy than shuffling a stack of 43mm paulsons...oh wait...

There is no greater joy than shuffling a stack of 47mm paulsons...oh wait...

There is no greater joy than shuffling a stack of 50mm paulsons...yeah...that's the stuff.

Status and an excuse to buy more chips. Practicality, they have no place

Assuming they're the same thickness and made form the same materials (i.e. same density), some quick math tells me that:

43 mm are 21.6% heavier (say, 12.6 g if the 39 mm is 10.0 g)
47 mm are 45.2% heavier (14.5 g to 10.0 g)
50 mm are 64.4% heavier (16.4 g to 10.0 g)

(basically, it's the ratio of the square of the radius...)

*EDIT* If a 39 mm ASM chip weighs 9.0 g, I'd expect the 44 mm version to weigh in at 11.5 g... "official casino weight!"

Re: 44m chip question

If you are asking about the 44mm ASMs, I believe Matthew indicated in his review that they were about 10g, which makes sense as the standard ASM is somewhere in the 8.5-8.8g range.

For paulsons, see jdunfords answer above.
