Chip encased in lucite

I have 2 questions:

1. How much does the value of a collectable chip decrease if it is encased in lucite? That is, if the chip is normally worth $200, how much is it worth if it is in lucite?

2. Is it possible to get the chip out of lucite without damaging it?

1. no idea...sorry.

2. damn near impossible....unless there's a method that i'm unaware of.

I get so p***ed off when I see the Dunes $25k baccarat chips in this crap on eBay...

Re: Chip encased in lucite

This is called slabbing and is quite possibly the worst thing you can do to a collectible chip.

Re: Chip encased in lucite

I know CCGTCC members, in particular, are often sensitive to the subject of "slabbed chips" (chips encased in lucite). In short, you can't safely remove it from the lucite so I wouldn't consider it a chip any longer.

I'm no expert, but the way I think of it is that chips in lucite should be thought of as something completely different, and compared to other chips in lucite. They can be valued according to their rarity as slabbed chips (among other factors)...

Meanwhile, collectible chips not in lucite are compared separately. Generally chips in lucite will be less valuable than their non-lucite cousins, but in many cases, those chips might not even exist outside of lucite. But it's hard to compare the relative values of a chip that has been slabbed to one that has not.

As I understand it, the $25,000 Dunes chips in lucite were given to employees of the casino. They were encased in lucite because they would otherwise be live... and the casino didn't want people cashing them out for $25K apiece! They were made and released as collectible "souvenirs", and shouldn't really be comparable to non-lucite casino chips.

Dunes $25,000 chips that aren't in lucite were removed from the vault after the casino closed (or rubble after it was demolished?), and are very rare, hence their much higher value.

*EDIT* Just read the "slab free" links... Take everything I say on this subject with a grain of salt, as I wasn't referring to that sort of "slabbed chip"...

Re: Chip encased in lucite

Slabbing is something different .

The follwing coin was "slabbed"

THE 10 GREATEST MYTHS OF SLABBED COINS

Slabbing is done in order to protect the chip, coin or baseball card so that it stays in its same condition forever but can be safely removed (with some effort). It is also usually accompanied by a certification to say what condition it is in.

The others in lucite are basically paper weights.

Re: Chip encased in lucite

Yeah, what piggy said.

Slabbing is when the chip gets graded and encased, with some kind of "expert" appraisal of its value. The case can only be opened by destroying it, voiding the appraisal. It's very popular with coins (I think) and collectible toys (I know). I'm so happy there are folks out there keeping slabs out of chipping.

Pouring acrylic over the chip is different, and irreversible. It's what you do to lucky pennies, four leaf clovers, baby's first poop, etc.

What piggy missed is the most important part of a slab that Josh touched on. It is encased and then "GRADED". Once a chip is encased it is difficult to remove the chip from the encasement without damaging it. Most times the chip breaks. However it is the grading of the chip that makes it a true slab.

Encased in lucite I think is pretty cool. Especially when done in sets. It isn't chip collecting, more like paper weight collecting but it is related.

Re: Chip encased in lucite

Not true. You can get lucite off. Just travel to Mordor. There's this big mountain there...
