Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

I thought it might be fun to share experiences with other regarding the great chip buys or sales they made over time, whether they "got lucky", a "shrewed buy" or "screwed--oops, wish I hadn't done that--can I have a do-over?" Is there a memorable "touchdown" or "fumble" in their chipping past? Either or both sides of the good or bad deals are OK to share.

I'll start it. Consider this Chicken Soup for the Chipper Soul!

Here's my lucky sale moment. Many of you may be familiar with the Vineyard chips. I got a bunch early and built off the sets I bought. The frenzy started and I was able to turn a few chips very nicely. Most memorably, I sold a single, mint $10 Vineyard on eBay for $83.00. I could have made 6 second chance offers over $65, but didn't offer any. Not a bad sale, and based on the failure to offer second chance offers, just a few fumbles in there--oops!

What about you?

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

Cool idea for a thread. My best buy has to be my Condado Beach Paulsons. I acquired 900+ of them from a single seller and it was a painless purchase. I haven't yet turned many of them except for a few sample sets. I'm pretty sure they'd fetch a tidy profit though.

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

To make a long story short I profited over $6000 in a matter of a couple months off PNY's. Bought my wife's wedding ring with the dough!!!

This is what I had at one time and it turned into a diamond ring.

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

bought 120 PNY $1000's from "the source" for either $2.75 or $3 a chip. Sold most of them for at least an avg of $30 each. they are purdy chips though.

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

I bought a set of 800 Egyptians, including octagons and plaques for about $.80/chip (incl. octs & plaqs). I sold most of the octagons and plaques plus the chips I didn't need and thus got my final set for a great price.

That's the only time I turned a profit on a resale--I profited from the resale of the octagons and plaques.

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

The Good:
I bought Crystal Parks 300 x $3's, 200 x $2's for $1.29 each

The Bad:
He offered me 180 x $20's @ $1.89 each and 85 $100's @ $3.50 each. I did not have enough money! they were sold next day. He was a very nice person.

That was when they originally hit ebay about 2 septembers or octobers ago. Nobody was really hot on them then, I picked up a sample set of one of each denom from his auction to check them out (that was a good price too as I recall) and once I saw them decided to build a set. I didnt like the $25s so I went with $20s instead and got almost 2 racks of them, at least a rack of primary 500s, probably a rack and a half of $100s and 50 of the primary $1000s all for $2 each. I remember thinking at the time that I must be nuts paying $2 each for chips. I almost went with fewer $1000s but decided to go for it and get 50 lol. I wanted to get more but didn't want to spend another $100 on 'just' 50 more chips. oh if only I had a time machine.

I think I was the 2nd or third ChipTalker with a playable set. And a few months later or so all hell broke lose.

Re: Chipper Tall Tells--Shrewd or Screwed?

Oh and we played with them all every couple of weeks! Then I found out about the secondary rack and decided to get some of them because I liked the 100s better and the 500s wouldn't get confused in the pot. Got the secondary 500s for about the same or less (1.85 sticks in my mind) and sold my rack of primary 500s to a fellow CTer for the same price I was buying the secondaries for. And about a week or 2 later they went up to about $5each. I was kicking myself.
