Soprano Edge Spot problem?

Has anyone else who bought Soprano six stripes lately noticed a problem with the formation of the edge spots? Some spots are very hour-glass shaped. See the right hand stack below.

Here's a closer shot:

This is very noticeable on the black and grey chips that I got. Not as bad (although a few examples) on the white, red, green, yellow and blue chips. I suspect that the mold may be getting worn and allowing the top layer material to bleed across the edge off the stripes (base material) during the molding process.

You can clean them up (the left hand stack above have been fixed by me). However, it is time consuming and tedious to do.

Is this:
  • an isolated case,
  • not worth worrying about (adds character?), or
  • something that potential buyers of Sopranos need to be aware of?

B.

IMO it makes them look more like compression molded chips and adds a bit of character.

Re: Soprano Edge Spot problem?

I have never purchased these, but I think they look great that way. It does add that bit of uniqueness to them and would make it hard for someone to sneek others into your game.

I like chips that are different than the others of the same type, but thats just me.

I would leave them as they are.

Re: Soprano Edge Spot problem?

Below is a link to a pic of some of my Sopranos that I bought in March of 2007 from DCG. The edgespots don't look like yours. Since that pic I bought about 1300 total of which 450 are black and I didn't notice a problem with the edgespots. These were my first set of chips that I still have and for the money they are great!

Yeah - I think that this may be a fairly recent issue. I got my Sopranos in October and I originally got a mix of black chips - some were loose and looked like yours (well formed edge-spots and a slightly glossy finish) while the ones in wrapped rolls were duller and had the poorly formed spots. Tom at DCG was kind enough to swap out the blacks so that they all looked the same - unfortunately, I ended up with all the duller type.

Since I got two different types of the black, I think that the manufacturer may have changed their plastic. Maybe the 'new', duller black plastic flows more easily in the mold and this is why it bleeds across the white base material.

Like in you photo, my other colors are much better - although there is the occassional mis-formed spot (like I notice on some of your reds).

This also affected the grey sopranos that I got.

Don't get me wrong - I think that they are a great chip for the price and I really like them. However, I posted so that others considering Sopranos go in with eyes wide open.

Re: Soprano Edge Spot problem?

Being too perfect makes them look cheaper than they are. A little imperfection makes them look a little pricier as most of the clays' edgespots aren't perfect. I wouldn't worry about it.
