I see Skulls advertised as pre and post v7. So there are differences between them. My question is what is the difference, how noticable is it and has anyone mixed the chips of different versions in a game and what is their opinions on them?
I'm getting a set from PSO that I presume will be v7. It is going to be a cash set mainly for use with my work colleagues, where poker and beer have equal value on our poker nights, so I don't think a very small difference would be noticable for most.
The current V7 blanks are from Sunflye. The graphics are suppose to be brighter and smoother. There are more than one series of pre V7 blanks. They are NJ's own blanks, the surface are textured, a bit like sandpaper. The difference between the current pre V7 and older pre V7 is the thickness. Jim from NJ has replied to one of my posts that the V7 and the current pre V7 are the same thickness but it seems that reports from owner differ.
The current NJ from the PSO is the V7 and you should be happy with them as it will be easy to add more in the future.
Here's my take on the two versions. I recently received a sample set of V7 skulls chips from Nevada Jack's. The chips arrived safely and were packaged well. I brought out my sample set of pre V7 chips to compare them with.
The chips are nice and I will outline the difference between the new and old. The V7's have a brighter color appearance. When comparing the edges of both, the V7's initially look to be a thicker chip. On closer comparison the older chip actually has a bit of a slope to either side of the edge making it appear thinner than the V7 which appears to have a more distinct edge. In actuality I think both chips are really the same thickness.
The artwork on both is really nice. I really love the skulls. Both have a sandpapery texture however the I would categorize the V7's as a finer sandpaper feel and the pre V7's a coarser feel. When stacking them, the newer chips are a bit slippery and slide across each other easily. The older chips stay together much better in a stack.
When riffling the chips there is a bit of a noise difference. One has more of a click and the other a clack. They both sound like ceramics and definitely nothing like a clay chip.
My personal preference between the two is the older pre V7 chip. I really like the texture which has more of a pseudo clay like feel to it.
