Do you enjoy replicas?

With all of the discussion going around and a few recent GB's being cancelled, I was just curious of the overall attitude of the entire CT community.

I am not asking if you think they are morally acceptable, I am asking if you would enjoy playing a home game with them.

Re: Do you enjoy replicas?

Well, I am hoping for a simple yes or no, but I know people will certainly express their opinions.

I hope they just stick to the question, but we'll see soon enough.

Re: Do you enjoy replicas?

That depends on what they're replicas of.

The Bellagio replicas are butt-ugly.
The BCC and Chipco Vineyards are nice.
The Dunes replicas will be sweet.

Yes.

there will always be a dichotomy on this subject- and each with it's own merits - and shortcomings.

To copy in it's entirety a chip design in order to deceive or defraud is one arena--

To take a chip image many like- change it- make it clear that its NOT a duplicate in order to defraud or deceive- another arena.

We just went through this with our compression chips--I'm not loosing any sleep over it- nor should any casino whereby someone makes a tribute chip based, in part, on their chip design. If anything, it's free advertising and probably will increase visitation to a given casino.

We can argue the ethics on this all day long---and never reach a valid conclusion. Some will want/buy these--- some will not. SOme will argue it's wrong- others argue whats the harm.

I think when something is borderline infringement AND huge amounts of profit are being realized it becomes an issue--
for someone wanting a disney set of chips for their 3 year old- or a starwars set of chips-- ESPECIALLY in this day and age whereby anyone with a printer and an office depot close by can achieve this- who cares.

Nike, Oakley, etc ALL have alot at stake--- but it really doesnt effect them as many think-- those who can afford nikes will buy real ones-- those who cant will buy knockoffs.

I wont even mention the multi billion dollar illicit pharmaceutical business China enjoys--

Poker chips that look like Bellagios or WSOP--- aint worth the time it took to write this reply.

Re: Do you enjoy replicas?

For the most part yes. Especially WSOP replicas....for me, they're probably the closest I'll come to playing with chips from the big one.

Re: Do you enjoy replicas?

Leaving morality issues completely out of my response, I like playing with anything that looks good. Problem with most of the replicas is that they are stuck trying to replicate a chip that, itself, isn't all that great. Look at the Proteges, Samurais, or any other chip that is just visually stunning. I love them.

The WSOP replicas, not so much. They aren't really that nice looking. The Dunes replicas have some real potential as they are going to be a version of a really really nice looking chip.
