Chips: 3 | | Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s first time poster.
okay i've decided to buy my first semi-expensive chip set (so far all i've gotten is the dice chips that we all love so much). so after some searching and comparing i decided that Nexgen River Tour's are definitely for me. That is until i read this... http://www.pokerchipreviews.com/inje...l#desert_palms and saw this... http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?i...sc00043lu7.jpg and now i have no clue as to what to do. I think both look very nice and would be happy with either (as long as i rip the labels off of the palms and replace them with new ones).
so here's my question...which ones feel better, handle better, shuffle better, stack the highest without toppling (my brother stacks his chips huge, so this is important for his approval lol).
i'm basically asking people who have shuffled, felt, played with both kinds and what you prefer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!! |

Chips: 2,925 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s Well, they're both slippery, so stacks larger than 20 are very tippy (even 20 will fall over if the table is bumped). The Desert Palms don't have a metal slug, so they're about 10 g and theoretically sound better, although the Nexgens are soft enough that they don't clink much at all (and are about 12.2 g each, for the record). If you liked the Desert Palms logo, they'd save you having to get labels... and keep in mind the mold says "Desert Palms" right in it, so it's not a bad idea to stick with that theme. Both should shuffle well, in a slippery sort of way. I say that because several of my players can't shuffle dice chips but love shuffling my Nexgens; meanwhile, I have trouble shuffling the Nexgens (they slip all over the place on me), while I can shuffle my Samurai clay chips much easier.
If you want chips for stacking and sound, you can either go with Faux Clays (at a much cheaper price point; ~ $0.045 each) or BCC T-mold solids (at a little higher price point; ~ $0.58 each). The only problem is, they're both solids (no spots) and don't label well (get the 2 mil labels from HogWild, and you might be okay).
Another option is PalmImports chips. He has solids and "Wallsons" (faux Paulson; the spotted version of his solids). They're extraordinarily cheap, are actually (sort of) compression molded, and are designed to take custom labels (and they'll make some of the best labels for those chips right there for you).
Here are some appropriate links for you:
Faux Clay ("Deluxe Dice 9.5 g"): http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...gory28-99.html
(only a few colours left, but you can dye the whites)
BCC T-mold solids: http://www.holdempokerchips.com/products.asp?cat=53
PI/PokerChipLounge Wallsons: http://www.pokerchiplounge.com/produ...iew/727_2.html
(there might be a ChipTalk discount, so don't just pay full price)
Also, scroll down to the 10 g "old fashioned" and "great wall" here: http://www.pokerchiplounge.com/products/index/172.html
Not sure where to find the solids; might need to PM Joe (PalmImports).
Oh, and welcome to ChipTalk!!
*EDIT* PokerChipLounge has a special on Wallsons right now: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/pokerc...hip-offer.html |

Chips: 3 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s thanks alot you were very helpfull.
so are you saying that the nexgens/desert palms handle better than dice chips though? because all i've really played with has been dice chips. so if i can introduce something that looks better (which both do by alot) and feel a little better i'm sure i can get a good review.
unfortunately, right now i can't really spend more than 30 to 35 cents per chip. maybe somebody can help me find something even better than nexgens/pureclays!!! |

Chips: 500 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s I would go with some Faux Clays to start off with. At just 5¢ per chip you can't go wrong. You can use the money you save to get some plastic cards (like Dal Negros or Copags), upgrade your table, or just get some beer for the game. You could even put some money aside for that beautiful set of compression molded clay chips (ASM, BCC, or Paulson) that you will feel obliged to get if you hang out here long enough.
If you are still on the fence about this decision, I would recommend getting some samples of the chips in question. By handling them it will make your decision that much easier. Check the Member to Member section here for samples. Many of the Chiptalkers just have some extras lying around and wouldn't think twice about helping you out.
Oh, welcome to Chiptalk.

I had the Desert palms pure clay for a few month and I prefer them according to Nexgens.
Nexgens are nothing more than better looking dice chips in my eyes.
The Desert Palms ARE slippy, that's the only big disadvantage, but Nexgens are as well.
I personally loved the edgespots and colors of the desert palms combined with the great label. The handle and shuffle pretty well, are nice textured and do have that great engraved mold.
You might get confronted with about 10-25% offcenter labels.
Tip: Warm them up with a hair dryer and you can put them in the right spot very easy.
And they don#t have any metal insert. Even though they are a lot more silent then real clay. |

Chips: 1,207 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s I agree with Brewster. The best thing would be for you to put your money aside now and play with the dice. Save your money, then get the chips you want, not what you can afford now. Most folks here started with dice, moved up once, then again, then got what they wanted. I know I went from Las Vegas chips to labelled Nexgens to Labelled Paulsons (Yep, that's right!) to now contemplating custom BC's.
Save your money. If you can't do that, get the Faux's. You will be happy and you will save money for later... |

Only a little more than you were planning and they are great chips: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/group-...casino-24.html
How many chips were you planning on getting? And how many players, what setup do you need to cater for (eg: 10 players, starting with $1000 in chips each)? I bet we could optimise the breakdown so that you can get fewer but better chips.

David. |

Chips: 329 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s What everyone said. Get samples, save the money, etc. However, between NexGens and PureClay I have to go with the Pureclay just because they don't have a metal slug, have a much nicer mold, and of course, great labels. Imo though they are very slippery, although after a few games they will be less so. Soundwise, though, they are not that great, they sound more like plastic chips than clay.
If you want to stay in your price range with less slippery chips you may also check out the neophyte chips from sidepot.com. They are a bit boring to look at, and have the same edge spot for all denoms but overall they are pretty nice. They cost about the same as the Pure clay and have a louder sound than them and shuffle ok. The labels can scratch a bit tough and you can leave a mark on the chip with a fingernail. http://www.buypokerchips.com/neophyt...chips-s/28.htm
You could also try the new Sopranos. They are similar to the neophytes but only cost 7.5 cents and have several new colors. Not sure if you can label them tough. http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...ory62-120.html |

Chips: 146 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s Also take into consideration that the Nexgen River Poker Tour chips are no longer manufactured, and some places are running out of stock, so it may be difficult to expand on any chipset you do manage to buy.
(But I do agree - they are very nice to look at) |

Chips: 237 | | | Re: Nexgen River's vs. Desert Palm "Pure Clay"'s You can't go wrong with the Fauxs people have been recommending, and they are much more preferable to the NexGen/Desert Palm chips you are considering.
Another option is the "Sopranos" chips which many on here are fans of as well.
My vote is for Fauxs or Sopranos. They are available at discountcasinogear.com | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
