Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

I've still got a lot to learn regarding chips but can someone explain the purpose of a NCV chip like the example below:

Many thanks and I'm sorry if this is a stupid question.

Re: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

it's supposed to add flexibility to your set.

if you bought a denom set with 25, 100 & 500, you can use your ncv as a 5 for a smaller stacked tourney (like t1000) or you can use it as a 1k chip in a t5000 or t10,000 tourney.

works the same for a cash game. it lets you mix it up once in a while; maybe one group of players like micro-stakes while another group are a bunch of high rollers. so if your cash set contains $1, $5 & $25, your ncv can sub in as a $0.25 or $100 chip depending on your mood

Re: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

Casinos use NCV (No Cash Value) chips for their tournaments. This effectively differentiates between cash chips ($100 cash value) and tourney chips (T100). By separating the two sets, you cannot smuggle a few tourney chips off the table and put them in play at the cash table.

example:
cash game - $100 gets you $100 in chips
Tournament - $100 gets you T5000 in chip

Just imagine the problems the casino would have if you could take your NCV chips and put them in play at a cash table.

Non-denominational chips increase the flexibility of your set by allowing you to use them for a wide variety of values.

Re: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

It's worth differentiating between no cash value chips and non denom since the terms get mixed up.

Non denoms add flexibility since you can use it for anything you like.

NCV chips might actually have denoms on them, but are used for tournaments and you can't cash them in.

So all the WSOP ME chips are NCV, even though they have all got denoms on.

I suppose that any non denom would have to be NCV, since you wouldn't know what it was worth

Re: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

It lets you play tourneys and cashgames with the same set, so you don't need 2 separate sets. I'm a great advocate of NCV sets, even more so I'm against $ symbols, since over the pond we don't use em that much .
(except for online poker)

I knew the differences between the cash chips vs. tournament chips in terms of NCV but it was the no denom NCV chips I wasn't sure about.

Re: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: NCV Chips

Hello Blakey- the pretty green chip is very nice isnt it? just take it and throw it in the middle of the table after mommie gives you 5 cards from this BIG deck of cards.

if your cards are nicer then Kelly's cards and mommie's cards you get to take ALL the chips from the center of the table.
Isnt that nice?

No dear, mommie will deal.
Give me the cards.
I SAID give me the cards
Put the chips down now
PUT the chips DOWN
GIVE me the damn cards ya friggin brat!

( you DID say explain it to you like youre 5 years old)
Best I could do

I think we should denomiate all chips in the Metric system so they can be used overseas.
