Re: So what is it that makes poker chips so addictive?
Only in my dreams could I have as many sets as you. They were gorgeous, though. But I've decided that my Egyptians are still the perfect chips for me.

Well, there is a house for sale near me -- buy it and we'll have poker games forever! I don't have any Egyptians (other than the plaques I use w/the Pharaohs)

Yes the egyptians are nice - beautiful to look at AND incredible feel. These run circles around the Luxor's first chips issued when the place opened

Re: So what is it that makes poker chips so addictive?
Great question and great responses. I do not have an addictive personality. I don't smoke, take pills or medication (unless I am ill), I don't drink to get drunk anymore (but I do drink), and I never liked casino gambling. I hated to work hard to make money and then risk losing it. But then I went to Vegas and have been going every year since. My fascination with casinos is exactly what they want it to be - the colors, the sounds, and the overall feel. What I always liked was having a big stack of colorful chips in front of me. Until recently, I didn't know CT and this culture existed. It enabled me to bring the casino feel home.
Regarding chips specifically, when I first joined CT I wouldn't say I became addicited, rather I became hyper-focused on chips - learning what I can about types, colors, denoms, etc. Once I got my first sample set and full set and handled and shuffled them, the hyper-focus became an addiction. What got me was the tangible nature of chips - you can see and touch them. And chips are not simple, but complex. Each manufacturer has a different feel/weight/color variation/label design. You can design your own, you can buy stock chips, you can buy chips designed by someone else, you can be part of a group buy, you can buy on ebay, you can sell on ebay, you can be outbid by another CTer on ebay, you can shuffle them, you can do tricks with them (not that I can), you can collect them, you can display them, you can roll around in them if you are develvjd's son, you can go broke buying them....OMG I have to buy more. Gotta go.................

I think this person was also hoarding Faux Clay Yellows, Oranges, Greys, Purples, and Blues.
http://www.capecodonline.com/cctimes/junkhouse15.htm
It's an OCD thing for me. I get intensely wrapped-up in different things at different times. There was fishing gear - rods reels - inflatable pontoon, kayak, football gear; then football gear - cleats, gloves, etc. as a few prior examples. I'm still into those things, but not w/ the level of intensity I once was.
Now we have poker chips, cards, poker tables - just so many different options/choices.
I run a weekly tourney style game that usually 6-8 players. I've only had (2) instances in the last year or so where I had (2) tables going w/ a total of 14 players. I usually have no more than 240 chips in play at one time, and I've never had more than 450 in play. So, how I've convinced myself that I need more than the 3,000 chips I already have is beyond me.
I definately don't need more than 2 card set-ups, but somehow I have 6. I'm sure my obsession will eventually wane, so in the meantime I try not to spend too much to try to keep from pissing the wife off. Anytime I start talking to her about spending large dollars on a nice set of chips, all she has to do is point to the $1,000 kayak that's been hanging in the garage for almost (2) years. I tell you, I had to have that thing. I did all the research to find the best fishing kayak, and I NEEDED it. It's only been in the water once. So, I do my best to avoid repeating those kind of mistakes.

Re: So what is it that makes poker chips so addictive?
I'm just the opposite. I never was a collector.
I discovered poker a couple of years ago and was immediately aware of the huge difference between casino chips and mass produced home chips. I wanted the former for all the reasons described previous - looks, feel, handling, sound. Chips are one of the most aesthetically pleasing objects I've ever handled. I became enamored and then hooked.
My first collectible and a fine one at that.
