It seems there are not too many chips in the .20, .30 and .40 cent range. You pretty much go from cheap to good, and then very good.

.20 cent range (knock off Desert Palms)
.30 cent range (All-In chips, not sold anymore)
.40 cent range (1003's)

Can you guys add to this list? This price range seems to be a gray area, and I'm sure other people would like to know all the chips available. This can include specials and Group Buys.

Neophytes sell from .35 to .24 depending on how many you buy. These were my introduction to chip upgrades for the home game

Kingpins are the blank equivalent to the Neophytes. AceHighSupply still has some in stock, at least he did a few months ago. They are also in this price range.

I think the thing about chips in this price range is Faux Clays are better. Seriously. This was my price range and I bought 1200 Faux Clays instead.

I think you nailed it right there. Not much going on in that range in terms of chips that are highly praised on these boards.

I often see people advise others to save up and buy fewer, pricier chips, and build a nicer set slowly. I guess if a person cares enough not to buy plastic suited/dice chips, it is likely that s/he will eventually want the goods.

I'm not an expert on security or anything, but it seems to me in that price range you want to find something second-hand that is cheap and (relatively) rare, or slap custom vinyl labels on cheap chips. How much you put into security depends on your group and the stakes I'd imagine.

It would be cool to use racks of real casino chips, which is free in the end, but could tie up a lot of money if your game is played for more than nominal stakes.

I say that you should add a dollar per chip to the budget and get some custom TRK. They seem to pop up frequently enough.
