Chips at home game I attended thursday

So, I got invited to a home game by some friends who haven't thrown a game in awhile, or at least haven't invited me to one in awhile. I asked if I should bring chips, plastic cards, chairs, etc.

"I think matt bought some chips. We don't have plastic cards though, and maybe you can bring a couple chairs just in case."

I brought my 500 nevada jacks set with plastic cards.

Another friend had brought his chips and he thought that I had the same kind because the aluminum case looked alike. He opened his up and inside were 500 dice chips of 5 different denoms.

Matt opened his vinyl case and he had 500 dice chips too, in the same denoms. The chips are of two different manufacturer's, so they're different thicknesses, but they were set on using them. They were going to combine them and then use some of mine if they needed.

I showed them the ceramics, and they'd never heard of them. "You mean clay?"

They wanted to do $0.10/$0.25 blinds and my set is for a T1500 tourney or a $0.05/$0.10 cash game if you pretend the dollars are pennies. I convinced them to use just my set, since I had more of only 3 denoms, and we pretended that the nickels were dimes.

Got many "these are nice chips", and one person asked me how much they weighed. I said, "Almost 10 grams." I knew why they asked, but wasn't going to try to explain.

They were set on using their paper cards though. Which was fine with me. It was a new deck.

I think the idea is he pushed to use his chips instead and got a positive reaction. After all, those chips are way better than dice chips.

Re: Chips at home game I attended thursday

I attended a party this past weekend and did not bother bringing my chips as I was not expecting a game to break out. Sure enough, someone suggested a game and another person comes out with a small (300 chips) set of hotstamped dice chips and the most ragged, stained, dogeared deck of cards I have ever seen. The chips I can live with but the cards had to go. I came to the realization that while I love chips (and who here doesn't) I can tollerate a game with dice chips. I can not play with well-used paper cards though.

Re: Chips at home game I attended thursday

At the home game I play at on Sunday Night's, This past week a friend of mine who plays just came back from Vegas and had gotten me about 15 different $1 chips as I was looking through them a person asked me to see them and he said... "These are pretty nice, there just like the chips I have at my house. There 13.5 gram just like the casino ones. My friend bought over some 14.5g's and they just seemed too heavy, but these are pretty good." It took alot not to start laughing as he said that.

Gotta love it when people are clueless. Even with the bomb chips in hand they can't tell any difference...hopeless I say.

Re: Chips at home game I attended thursday

Glad you got positive feedback on the NJs. So often folks seem to be clueless even when handling nice chips for the first time.

Too bad about the cards though - at least the paper deck was new. I've got home game regulars that prefer paper too, so understand.

You're a strong man to avoid reacting to that statement.

I'm probably not very good at describing the subtleties of the situation, but perhaps you're not a chip snob yet?

One thing I wonder is when are they going to start actually selling dice chip sets in usable configurations of denominations?
