Somewhat humorous story

My wife went out with some friends last night and apparently they got into a discussion about what each was getting for their respective significant others. My wife and I had decided to not to get each other gifts for various reasons. Well apparently one of the guys there that I've played cards with but who's never played at my house says he saw this awesome set of chips at Meijers (local retail store) that my wife should get me because I would just love them. Its regularly $100 but its on sale for like $60 for 500 chips that are not the normal dice or suited style and come in a nice mahongany case. I bust out laughing and almost made the cardinal mistake of saying what I paid for my ASM or TRK chips. My wife knows that I have custom chips and that they were expensive but the details were "glossed" over.

Re: Somewhat humorous story

People are amazed when I tell them good edgespotted clay chips cost $1 or more each. What they don't realize is that they are infinitely better than their dime-per dice chip counterparts. It does make me look at other people's hobbies differently though. I used to scoff at what some of my buddies paid for golf equipment. Now I can sort of relate to things like that.

Re: Somewhat humorous story

Yeah, that's right. I musta told my wife about a hundred times how inexpensive the Bellagio replicas were, but I might've neglected to mention how much I paid for the Pharaoh's, Paulson shaped inlays, etc.

Inadvertant oversight on my part, of course.

But she now says that Paulsons are her favorite chips, nothing feels quite as good. Bingo!

You must truly love your wife. You recognize that she has no real interest and would just be bored with too much information on the subject.

I have a friend that now lives a ways away from me and he said that he has basically stopped playing poker because playing with the cheap set of nevada jacks I gave him annoys him after playing with my chipco's for so long.

Sidenote: My wife is awsome because after I got the chipco's she started talking about how she wanted a set of Paulsons eventually.

Information can be good and bad. Just mount one in a ring and then they will reconise the quality.... he he....

Re: Somewhat humorous story

I am VERY careful not to ever mention what I paid for my chips. All people know is that they are expensive.

The way I figure, if someone does the research, they are interested in them and won't see a problem with it. If someone doesn't do the research, then it will seem extraordinarily expensive.

The golf equipment metaphor is a good one. I may use it.

Re: Somewhat humorous story

All I have to say is I'm soooooo glad this website exists. If I didn't have my brothers and sisters here at chiptalk.net, I might think I was a little nuts for spending the money that I do on chips. Don't get me wrong. I am, in fact, crazy for spending that kind of money but everyone has a vice. Right?
It's just that all of my friends just don't understand my obsession with poker chips. However, when we play poker they always want me to bring my chips with me.
