Chips: 10,507 | | | A question is posed to CT'ers from thechipboard.com.... Frequent poster to thechipboard.com and a CC>CC member, Michael Siskin is askingthe following of ChipTalk.net participants: Quote:
I have noticed a recent influx of posters who have come from the Chip Talk site. Welcome to you all. I have a question born of pure ignorance. When you collect sets for home play, is it critical to the value that you have denominations in perfect sets of 100, or 50 or whatever? The reason I ask is that I collect chips from underground poker clubs, particularly 21st century NY metro area clubs. I once saw an ebay auction for a set of chipco chips from a ny club called the River. The chips came in 4 denominations, if I remember correctly, and said "Soho" or "Soho, NY" or something like that at the bottom. I asked the seller if he would sell any individually, but be said no. I wrote the winning bidder, but did not get a response. Do any of you know of any sets that came from closed NY metro area poker clubs? And, if so, is it possible the owners would be willing to part with a small number?
It never hurts to ask! Michael Siskin

One thing I know is that a set without a $500 or $1000 chip is very hard to sell, aka the Maxamillion out of New York that was closed down. Lot's of $25 and $100 chips available, but without the $5's and $500's, it's pretty hard to make a sellable set. Even though a tournament set of $25 and $100's is more than good enough for a game but I have a hard time convincing anyone that they can actually play a game with 2 denoms.
I would also say that a playable set needs to be at least 300 chips with 4 denominations if possible. |

Chips: 1,577 | | | Re: A question is posed to CT'ers from thechipboard.com.... As a relative "noob" to the casino collection (though already have two sets now), I'd think that most sets are sold that way for a couple of reasons:
1. It's easier to ship full racks than partial racks...
2. It's easier to sell full rows (20-25) than it is to sell partial rows (eg. 13, 22)...
3. Chips are wanted in round amounts (20, 50, 100) due to the fact there are 10 people at a full table... easier to split 50 chips among 10 people than 47...
Having said that, I think that most CTers wouldn't have a problem buying a set with odd amounts of chips IF the chips were in demand. For example, if someone offered to sell 17 high value PNYs, or 27 Egyptian octagons, I imagine there would be plenty of interest.
As to whether we'd split up a set to sell chips individually... I don't imagine most CTers would -- there's just something unpleasing about seeing a space in your chip racks.
(Then again, what do I know? I only stayed at a Holiday Inn Express...) |

I have a set of chips that i like, and I'd like to take a sample set out of the set of 700 and display it. However, I hate the idea of one of each denom missing from the racks.
I realise it doesn't make much sense, but then not much at this site does |

Either cash game or tournment, yes you can play with 2 but I think everyone would prefer atleast 3, makes the stacks look better. I prefer to buy chips with a minimum of 50 chips, there is just not much you can do with fewer than that. If you are trying to start a new set 10 or 20 just is not going to cut it, it would take forever for you to get a playable set. IMHO |

IMHO | Just to clarify, I didn't mean to say in my post above that when getting a playable set I buy the chips 20 at a time ... yes, that would take a long time to complete and is a rather unwise way to purchase chips (unless you absolutely HAVE to do it that way for reasons beyond your control, such as chip availability) ... I buy all the chips I need at the same time, I just meant that my quantities for any denomination/color is always in multiples of 20's ... like 160, 240, 180, etc. |

Chips: 13,714 | | | Re: A question is posed to CT'ers from thechipboard.com.... 3 denoms is perfect for a cash game (IMO). Any more and there are too many chips to deal with (did I really say too many chips???)
4 denoms minimum for a tourney set - you can definitely get away with 3 denoms in a tourney but it is stretching it (IMO). I have played in toruneis that had as monay as 6 denoms - there was a lot of coloring up in that tourney
A savy person can get a set that has a wider range of denoms to cover both a toruney and cash game (IE: using the $5 in both a cash game or a tourney) (But why am I explaining that to CT'rs - I learned this from being a memebr here )
