Chips: 47 | | | Ok, so I've got a problem -Ceramic Chips Alright, I just received my ASM chips last week, have had my TR King custom HS for a couple months....I need a ceramic....NEED. Well, it'll take some time to cnvince a certain person that I really need a third set...that I won't be selling any to get this new set. In the meantime (whoa, old Helmut tune....remember Helmut? record company ate it on that one...whoops Tangent Man strikes again) I want to start designing a cermaic set. I currently have a 600 piece tourney set and a 400 piece cash set, I want to get about 1500 chips for my final set. The question is, has anyone compared all the ceramic companies and is there a best one to go with? I know Chipco is the standard by which ceramics are compared, but they are a bit pricier than the others and time wise they take much longer. Has anyone determined what the pros and cons are for each ceramic (those that have sampled them all)? I've got some Chipcos and some NJ's I'e handled the ABCgifts briefly, but was curious what folks here used in their decision process.
Design work will be ongoing...
TIA
Chris J (figured I'd personalize myself more before the elections )

Chips: 1,816 | | | Re: Ok, so I've got a problem -Ceramic Chips i'd like to help you with your design, but i would need to get a better feel about who you are. can you describe in great detail what you look like?
i've been back and forth on my favorite ceramic many times over. they all have their own great qualities, and i forgot how much i like each one until after i've sold them and feel samples later down the road.
i've had
chipco suits
chipco high society
br pro world champions (sun fly ibelieve)
played with boris' NJ skulls many times
when i first played with the chipcos, i thought they were beautiful, but too slick and high pitched. now, after shuffling my samples every once in a while, think they are some of the highest quality feeling ones and not as slick as i first thought. only downfall IMO on chipcos (not factoring price on time to have made) is the little higher pitch and the white ring.
NJ are on the top of my list for feel and sound because they are SO close to a clay, it's almost scary. a little blur in the graphics, but on a simple design you won't notice. you already have two great clay sets, so if i were you i'd go another route.
i think the br pro's are a perfect medium of the chipcos and NJs. sharper graphics than NJ, almost as good as chipco. a bit softer sound then chipco, not as soft as Nj. no white ring like chipco and i think palmimports can line up certain edge spots to the face (if these are sun fly chips). br pro is a top pick if you want the most well rounded set for a good price.
IMO on your case, if the price isn't an issue, i'd go chipco. you're looking for ceramic, not a ceramic that resembles clay, so it doesn't sound like the higher pitch sound will bother you.
hope this helps a bit. |

I own this Set of ChipCo's (my first custom Set) along with a cash set of BRPros
Both of these set gets lots of compliments and regular use. I would have to say that the ChipCo's are still the nicest chip, but the price (when compared to the newer BRPros) is still a little high for the value.
I love my ChipCo's, but I couldn't see spending that kind of money again given the variety of options out there compared to when I got mine.
Hope that helps, feel free to ask questions

Chips: 47 | | | Re: Ok, so I've got a problem -Ceramic Chips I'm white and wearing a shirt.
This may sound odd, but I'm going to design a white ring in regardless of which chip I use, I like the palms design and will probably rip off quite a bit form it. I want seperation from the edge and I won't even try to match edge stripes up, the edges will be independant of the face so there won't be any alignment issues.

I love the chipco set that I have, even though they are not my design. I cannot imagine spending a hundred hours on a personal design for a ceramic and then scrimping on the cost of the chips themselves. I'd much rather pay the extra, delaying the purchase if I had to.
I have ABC's in front of me right now, and you know, the printing quality on the smooth chips is very good indeed. The big downer for me is the very obvious seam that exists on the chip rolling edge. When I pick them up, they just feel cheap to me. Which is, or course, what they are. (relatively).
So, I can certainly see me ordering, say, 50 commemorative chips from ABC, because I need fast turn around and they do very small runs. Or prize chips, or whatever. Small runs.
Unless they really improve overall quality to the chipco level, I'd never make my last ceramic set anything other than chipco.
......(tries to think of an analogy).....metallic paint on a car. an extra $1000 maybe on the sale price, so maybe you have to save for another month to get it. Try to imagine buying flat paint and then, every time you walk towards the car, wishing you had just waited one more month and got what you really wanted. |

Chips: 1,816 | | | Re: Ok, so I've got a problem -Ceramic Chips i agree with strange. i'd go chipco. if end up doing another custom ceramic set, the only thing that may pull me away is the softer feel and sound of NJ's. but boris has some sahara paulsons coming, so if i want soft, we'll use them. |
