Chips: 6,850 | | | It must be asked at last -- What does your HUSBAND think of your chip addiction? I have to admit I find the threads about how to deal with the wife rather amusing.** But I have been thinking about posting this for a while since there are more than a few of us women here on CT. So let's ask about the other side of the coin: what does your husband/boyfriend think of all these chips?
My boyfriend is actually responsible for my chip addiction: he likes Egyptian things and has a ring with the Udjat eye on it. So I bought some samples of the Egyptians for him. And then I thought I should buy a few of the Pharoahs. And once I got my hands on those chips, it was all over for me. He likes the chips I've bought him, but they sit on a shelf. And I now have over 4000 chips. When I get a new package he says, "very nice" and goes back to playing Day of Defeat.
What about the rest of you? Does your husband/boyfriend care? Think you are crazy? Have his own expensive hobby?
**(And I must say that not only have I been amused by the "wife" posts, but they also lead me to the liberator shapes, so they have been very useful indeed!) |

Chips: 5,690 | | | Re: It must be asked at last -- What does your HUSBAND think of your chip addiction? Well goodness, it's about time someone posted this thread. In fact, I almost did it myself.
I have to say that my "addiction" is pretty mild, but...
It all started as a gift for my husband, actually. I bought him custom ASMs for his birthday, using cash I won at the card room so it was a surprise. I stumbled across chiptalk in my research (and was able to get 3D14's because of it) and stuck around the forums, because I like the people and there was some good strategy talk (without all the browbeating of 2+2).
But I couldn't stick around for so long and not get some others....
So after a while, I have samples of some Skulls, ABs, Pharaohs, Samurais, Faux clays (had to see what all the fuss was about there), some Nexgens.... some other random stuff too like HPC "business cards". Not a lot. But enough that he commented on them. "What are you going to do with all those?" "I don't know, I was just curious."
"Why?" "I don't know, I see them on the forums all the time, and I was curious. Now I have chips from most of the manufacturers, in case other people want to know about chips."
[pause] "Why aren't we playing with these ones? [hold up one of the Beauties]
"I don't know, would you have rather I got those instead of your custom chips?"
[thinks] "No." [pauses] "How long are these going to be out on the coffee table?" "I like to play with them. Are they bothering you?"
[ignores me, continues to watch golf] Seems pretty innocuous, I know, but this is trouble in our house. I'm trying not to buy more, 'cause I know it will get bad if I do. This is just him letting me know he disapproves. I figure I can use my poker winnings on this kind of stuff if I want, but I'm spending it all on non-poker chip stuff right now, so no more for me....
The infuriating thing is, he really doesn't spend much money on anything. The only thing remotely close is golf (he's a 2 handicap!) but he plays at cheap courses mostly, so, that's not too bad. He plays poker too, although not online and I honestly don't know if he's up or down in B&M's - it's close. |

In our house, he's the true addict. He turned me on to chip talk, and I haven't looked back!!
I loved the Pharaohs, and now his custom ASMs and the Winners Club oversized chips. I'm more of the sounding board for purchases and ideas, but he does the designing and buying. Though we're talking about a custom ceramic set because of the whole face printing and the extensive color selection (he's a clay junkie so this is totally my baby).
I'm less addicted to "playable" sets but LOVE collecting casino and sample sets. Though I enjoy learning new chiptricks and like taking chip pictures.
As for my chip buying, I pick up unique, classy and showy chips for card guards, like the Excalibur $2.50 and the Wynn $8 year of the dog.
In our house the chip addiction is shared, so any new UPS deliveries are promptly welcomed, and an evening of chip fondling ensues. With that said, with all the money spent on chips, we do feed our other hobbies as well, I have a very nice hard-tail Kona mountain bike, and we just bought an Xbox 360 (admittedly with thought to those early outs at our home tourneys).
