| Faux clay experiment a success! Ok, so there have been a few recent threads about the faux clays. Obviously these are popular chips that people would like to customize. I reposted something in the hotstamping thread about "cold stamping" using special inks.
Well, I finally tried it and here are my results.
I used a standard rubber stamp and the "Staz On" brand of ink. See the hotstamping thread for a link to the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I bought the worst color possible. I had thought it would be sort of a bright gold color similar to an actual hotstamp, but instead it is comparable to a highlighter! It's really only visible on the white chip, though you can tell it's on the others by holding them at an angle.
The stuff stays on like glue! I scraped the faces together, shuffled the chips, and then ran my thumb over the face of the chip. On the backside, I tried a normal stamp pad. Not only did it never dry, but when I washed the chips, it just slid off as they entered the water!
To check the durability of the stamp, I washed them in HOT, soapy water. My chips are now extremely faded and the edges are whitish. After playing with them for a bit though, the color is coming back. The stamp is still GREAT though. No smudging, running, or lifting. The ink seems to have just stained the chip permanently.
I recommend trying this if you have the time. I'm going back in a few days to get more ink. It's on sale at the Tall Mouse (not sure if those are around outside of CA) for $7.99 per pad. The previous post I found said it was like $11, so the price is good. I'll post pictures after I get more ink.
