Chips: 2,872 | | | Desert Sands or American Beauties I've just completed the PSO promo for the NJ chips and I have enough PSO points to fund the upgrade to either DS or AB. I got a sample set of the AB's and I am a fan of Greg Hildebrandt, so you think it would be a no brainer. However, I like the fact that the DS are denominated. Since I'm putting together a cash game set, it would just be easier if the chips had denoms. OTOH, I don't like the dice around the edge of the DS. Everyone else I know has cheap Dice chips and these just remind me too much of them, even though they are completely different looking. I threadjacked Babu's thread about Skulls vs. DS over at HPT when he was soliciting advice, but the only responses I got were a couple of posts saying the AB's were the ugliest chips ever seen. Thought I'd ask over here where people are more into chips in general.
So, what's your opinion? Desert Sands or American Beauties? |

Chips: 1,736 | | | Re: Desert Sands or American Beauties The AB's are definitely easier on the eyes! But I would have to go with the DS because they have the denominations on them. The group I play with is NEVER able to do without the denominations...... yes we have tried |

I would also point out that non-denominational chips allow you much more flexibility over the long term because you can always change their values to reflect whatever structure you want to play. For instance, with denominational chips you are limited to their face value or some multiple (like the divide by 100 method where $25 can be used as $0.25 etc) but with non-denom chips you can make the blue one $1, $2, $3.95, whatever you need. You will always have some players who cannot remember what each chip is valued at for that particular game, but most experienced players should be able to keep track. I have printed up a series of reference cards for my own AB setup which displays a picture of each chip and indicates its assigned value for the game in play. I have them all laminated and I just pass them out to players so they can look down and see what each chip is worth for themselves.

Chips: 6,131 | | | Re: Desert Sands or American Beauties 1. Skulls -- Easiest to add on to since there's always people selling them cheap in mtm.
2. DS - denoms
3. AB - most flexibility because no denoms (would be better if they were topless) |

Chips: 507 | | | Re: Desert Sands or American Beauties Andnow for something completely different. I beleive MSPatton (from HPC) has an offer where you can exchange your PSO chips for some of the Mardi Gras ceramics. You do have to contact him prior to placing your PSO order though.

And here is the link discussing this offer: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/holdem...-exchange.html

Chips: 444 | | | Re: Desert Sands or American Beauties I have a sample set of AB's and while they are nice to look at I don't think I buy a set to play with. I'd go for denominations everytime, especially if it is for a cash game where you will from time to time get new players who might struggle a bit with non denomination chips. Playing with one or two non denomination chips along with denominated chips is workable for almost anyone, but playing with all non denomination chips confuses a lot of people a lot of the time. My 2 cents anyway. |
