Chips: 60 | | | Advice for a first set I'm new to the whole poker chip thing, but after going over these forums I find myself understanding the addictiion and at the same time feel myself being pulled in slowly.
So, i got some hot stammped dice chips, $100 down the drain, I'm refusing to use them as the chips that I am going to use to host a tourny next weekend.
I need some advice on a certain chip i have in mind, its a coin inlay. http://pjccmall.com/cgi-bin/shop/ind...METAL10000&SPD=
I don't see how i could pass up the opportunity to get 1000 chips and a case for under 170 dollars with shipping.
But of course, instead of stepping in the same pile of dog crap I did last time, I've decided not to act right away but to browse around and ask a few chip gurus for their advice. That is where (hopefully) you guys will come in.
I am open to all types of chips as long as they have high and low end denominations (ring and tourney games), have alittle bit of good looks to them, and are under $350 including the shipping.
Thanks in advance,

Chips: 12,507 | | | Re: Advice for a first set WELCOME ABOARD. I am not sure, but I think the chip you linked to is a Matsui plastic chip with coin insert.
I don't know if you really need 1,000 chips or not (only you would), but for under $350 you have a ton of decent quality 500 chip set options.
I would recommend looking at Nevada Jack Skulls ( http://www.nevadajacks.net/mall/nj_composite.htm) or Desert Sands ( http://www.nevadajacks.net/mall/desert_sands.htm). These are the same chip just with different graphics and you can see a review of them here: http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7781.
You may also look into a set of NEXGEN's, there are four different designs to choose from: http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...ory52-108.html or http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...ory40-146.html. Here is a review for them: http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7651
Another option would be Faux Clays: http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...gory28-99.html. These are a very popular inexpensive chip, with a review: http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7852
You might even like the Soprano's: http://www.discountcasinogear.com/st...ory24-120.html, which are reviewed here: http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8762
Those seem to be the best and most popular value chips you will find around here, but you might also like to look through all of the reviews we have here: http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8349
Good luck and enjoy.

Chips: 807 | | | Re: Advice for a first set I will have to second what Wyle is saying. For $350, and 1000 chips, your best bet is NJ ceramics. Do the PSO promo (the banner ad you will see at the top of this page) and get yourself some NJ chips. Or another good option is to get 1000 NExgens from Hog Wild at PersonalPokerChips.com (if he still has that great deal going) and then get some custom labels from one of the great label designers on this forum. You will not be disappointed whichever way you decide to go. |

I would suggest that you should consider just getting either a ring set or a tourney set right now - then save up for a while and get the other set. That way you won't settle on something that you'll regret later, because if you stick around this site long enough, something better always seems to be around the corner. As well, by the time you become a full blown chipaholic, you'll prefer to have different sets of chips for your ring games and for your tourneys.
Wyle has made some very good suggestions! |

Chips: 3,968 | | | Re: Advice for a first set These chips are 45c each ($450 for 1000 -- which should be large enough for any ring or tourney you want to run) and can be hot stamped (both sides for 10c). There's enough colors to get low denoms and standard colors...
They have a very nice weight and feel to them. The are very uniform, though. Not a bad thing, but clays are not uniform, so it gives it more of a manufactured look. Overall, I liked the chip. My one complaint is that the green is very dark and could be confused with the black in low light or if players have poor eyesight (hotstamping cures that problem).
On top of that, the company sent me a 6-chip sample for free.
See them here or go to the main page.

See them here or go to the main page. | No offense but I can't see spending $450 on chips that are only marginally better than an average dice chip. At 45 cents a chip, you should be able to pick up some NJ skulls if you are patient and look at the M2M section - many people are completing the PSO promo and unloading the chips for cheap. |

Vert | My advice is that you HAVE your starter set so don't throw any more money down the drain for an upcoming tournament. Most large groups use those cheap dice chips in tournaments anyway because they are cheap and they need a lot of chips.
IMHO your next step up will be either through one of this forums fantastic group buy opportunities or member to member sales of those same chips or other high end chips. Take your time and you will be much happier later on when you can a nice set of ASM's or many others that you will see. What's most important now is that you have your chips for a tournament so have a good time and don't worry about getting new chips this week. |
