I need help deciding...

I think I am going to get a large set of Pharoah's. Here's my dilema... I don't know if I should get the denominated ones or the non-denoms? Traditionally, I like the denoms on my chips, but my dilema is...

1. If I get the denoms, I would get the $25-greens, $100-blacks, $500-purples, $1,000-oranges (mostly for tournament play).

BUT, I love the blue chips (which are .50 denoms and obviously won't work for my tournament). So I think it might be weird having 4 denoms and the blue non-denom chip!

Also, if I get the high denoms I am pretty much stuck with tournament chips.

Do you think it is weird/confusing to have non-denom chips? Especially if they are nice clay Paulsons???

I am torn here and looking for input.

For a long time during the design/development of the Pharoah's chips, it looked like they would all be denoms except for the blue chip, which would be the only non-denom. Lots of folks here planned their sets around that combination.
I'd say go for it, if that's what you want. Having a single non-denom shouldn't be too confusing for your players.

If you buy the tournament set that you're considering, you can always play cash games with it using the $ are ¢ trick.

You'll love the Pharaohs.

It won't be long before you either add on to that set, or buy a separate set for your cash games, though.

Re: I need help deciding...

Good ideas. Would it be awkward/silly to go with ALL non-denoms Pharoahs? Greens, Blacks, Purples, Oranges, Blues - ALL non-denom?? Thoughts?

Re: I need help deciding...

i love the blues; i have 400 to use as $1s. then again, i have a 1300 chip set.

if you're buying less, i recommend getting non-denoms. then you use them for cash/tourny as you wish, and include the blue.

or you do the divide by 100 thing...

Re: I need help deciding...

.

Mr H,

The best answer can be reached only though answering some very important questions:

How many chips are you willing to buy?

How many tournament players (maximum) do you want to accomodate?

What is your preferred starting amount in tournament chips for each player (1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000)?

Does it matter if each player starts with 12 chips versus 50?

Do you ever allow rebuys? Add-ons? Is coloring up smaller, unnecessary chips important to you?

How often do you play cash games, limit/NL, stakes?

You prefer denoms, but what will the others in the game prefer (and will they need to be told what each non-denom chip is worth every 14 seconds)?

Lets start there,

-TripKings

Re: I need help deciding...

Mr H,

The best answer can be reached only though answering some very important questions:

How many chips are you willing to buy?

ANSWER: Willing to buy 700 to 1,000 (depending on the price).

How many tournament players (maximum) do you want to accomodate?

ANSWER: As of now, most likely 10.

What is your preferred starting amount in tournament chips for each player (1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000)?

ANSWER: At least 10,000 for 10 players. If 6 players, or mini tourney of 4 players - maybe 50,000 if possible.

Does it matter if each player starts with 12 chips versus 50?

ANSWER: I would lean towards more chips. Maybe not 50 exactly, but nothing less than 30 or so.

Do you ever allow rebuys? Add-ons? Is coloring up smaller, unnecessary chips important to you?

ANSWER: Right now it's one full rebuy. And yes, I'd like to color up smaller chips deep into the tourney if possible.

How often do you play cash games, limit/NL, stakes?

ANSWER: Mostly NL tourneys. But I am interested in starting cash games as well.

You prefer denoms, but what will the others in the game prefer (and will they need to be told what each non-denom chip is worth every 14 seconds)?

ANSWER: I do prefer denoms because they seem more "authentic" and "official" to me. The guys don't really care I don't think. I do think the denoms will prevent all the, "what is the green chip again?" stuff. Although if I opted for non-denoms, I would stick to the "color rule" as much as possible (green=25, black=100, etc.)

Lets start there,

-TripKings

Thank you for the help! I appreciate it!

Re: I need help deciding...

Mr H,

So you're thinking of spending up to ~$1000 on 1000 Pharaoh's? Ok.

Do you have any idea what the stakes of your cash game would be? $1-2 NL, $2-4 Limit, .25c-.50c NL, other?

Are you certain that you want a $25 chip for your T-10000+ tourneys(starting blinds $25-50). I think that that's fine, I'm just asking about your blind schedule.

I'll try to get back to you tomorrow with some specific ideas on chip breakdowns that should work well for your game (I'm sure others will chime in too).
