Packing chips for shipping purposes

Sometime soon I hope to sell a set of 1000 Paulson chips along with their racks and an acrylic birdcage style holder. What would be the best way to package the chips seeing how I no longer have the boxes that the chips originally came in? I wouldn't think that keeping the racks in the case and boxing them would be a safe method. Thanks in advance.

It can be done, but Im sure there are easier/safer ways...lots of bubble wrap, you might tape the racks together...I wrap stacks of chips together w/plastic wrap/boxing tape and cushion w/ bubble wrap.

Re: Packing chips for shipping purposes

I may have been lucky, but I've shipped the chips and racks together (chips in serted into the 5x20 racks). I just bubble-wrap each rack individually and then use the clear packing tape to tape the bubble wrap down tightly so that the chips can't move. I wouldn't try to ship the chips/racks inside the bird cage, however.

I've shipped over 5,000 chips in the past year.

If in racks, I wrap tight with bubble wrap, then put a sealable baggie over each one in case of water damage (if sending clay chips). You can ship 900 chips in one of those USPS flat rate boxes for $8.20 Best deal around. Pack tight so these things don't move at all in the box and tape the box with strong filament type tape because that box will be heavy. The birdcage should be shipped separately.

Re: Packing chips for shipping purposes

I assume you're speaking of the 11x8.5x5.5 box?

Sounds as though the bubble wrap method is the generally accepted one. Guess I should have kept those little boxes Apache ships with.

Wrap the racks a couple of times with saran wrap first, then put the bubblewrap around them and those chips won't be moving around at all.

Re: Packing chips for shipping purposes

Put the chips in their racks. Apply a layer of packing tape over the rack (the 3-4" wide stuff that looks like cellophane tape) to hold the chips in. Wrap the rack securely in bubble wrap.

... now comes the fun part.

You know those styrofoam peanuts that you got in your last web order of widgets? Here's your chance to get rid of them .

Put a small layer (about 3 layers) of peanuts on the bottom of the box, place the racks in the box edgewise, fill the unused area with styrofoam peanuts and allow another layer about 3-5 peanuts deep to cushion and then put the next layer of chip racks in, more peanuts, repeat until they're all in the box. For 1000 chips it shouldn't take more than two layers. The bird cage? Ship that separately, you'll just risk damaging it trying to put it in the same box with the chips.

My only concern is the possibility of the tape damaging the chips in some way.

Do most use UPS to ship or USPS? With something as fragile as chips, I'm a little concerned with USPS handling the package.

Thanks for all of your advice up to now. Now I just have to find a buyer!

Re: Packing chips for shipping purposes

Naw, the tape's not going to hurt the chips. If they were that frail and fragile, they'd have no business in a casino environment. One of our local cardrooms does that with racks containing a number of high valued chips ($500) when they give them to the customers. You could just wrap the chips in bubble wrap and hope for the best, but I suspect that is all you're doing. It's much better to tape the rack. BTW, be nice, and at each end of the tape double it over so that there's a little tab for the other guy to pull it off. Nothing more frustrating that trying to pull pieces of tape off of plastic. But that all having been said, there may be some people (some folks are real picky and finicky and/or whiney, with unrealistic expectations,) who may object to the use of the tape. If that's the case, wrap the rack in newspaper, kraft paper, or whatever you have laying around, and then wrap a layer of packing tape around the length of the rack (the tape will be holding the chips in, the paper is just to keep the adhesive off of the rack and chips.)

With regards to shipping methods, it's really not going to differ that much in handling. UPS and FedEX or more mechanized, but that's no guarantee of better handling. A postal clerk could damage a package in handling, but it's going to take a machine to really mangle it . Personally, I use FedEX, but only as a matter of convenience. Any of the other carriers are probably just as dependable. On the other hand, if you have to file a claim, one of the private carriers will settle it much faster than USPS.
