Newbie from Europe

Hi all,

Recently started playing poker and now I am looking for chips.

I got the samples from marlowcasinochips and pokershop.dk (BTW both great customer support) and I am somewhat confused by the composition and price of the chips I got.

From pokershop I like the "clay" model (poker, tournament design) which has a good sound and weight, but the feel is somewhat slippery (going to refer to them as "CLAY.DK").

Marlow claims to have supperior non-injection only chips. Ok, no clue what that means .

The chipco ceramic ones sound too much metallic/hard to me so I dont like those. Although the price is like 4x the CLAY.DK?

The R&T ones feel slippery too and quite expensive like the ceramic. So I dont see the advantage over CLAY.DK.

Then the clay from MArlow, like KeyWest and Paulson on the other I like quite alot, as they have a good sound and the edges are kind of rough. Although the price of those are comparable to the ceramic and other models from Marlow.

Anyone can please shed some light on this and provide some more info on the quality of the chips I got under review.

In conclusion, the "clay" ones from Marlow clearly seem the best to me, but the price is too much for a first. The other types on the other hand from Marlow are really comparably in quality (to me) to the low price CLAY.DK, while still being quite expensive.

Still confused...

Also, I like the design of the NJ skulls alot, but I dont have a sample. Which of the ones I have matches the closest to the NJ?

Thanks all,
Al.

Re: Newbie from Europe

The ones from poker.dk arent clay. They are just 11.5 gram plastic chips with metal inserts. You can find alot of those at great prices all over the net. Usually between $.07-$.20/chip. The other ones, like Paulson and ASM, are clay chips. They are more expensive and average around $1/chip. They are well worth it though. Then the Chipcos are ceramic, are usually about the same as clay (~$1/chip). They are quality chips, allow for better graphics, but the edgespots cant line up and some people dont like the feel or sound. Just look around the site, use the search button, and you can probably answer any questions you might have.

Re: Newbie from Europe

Oh, and Chipco is the closest match to the NJ SKull chip.

LAst thing. The clay chips have very rough edges at first. As you break them in (use them alot), the edges get smooth. When you first get a stack of clay chips like the Paulson or ASM, it will be almost impossible to shuffle because the edges are so sharp. As you play with them more, the edges will get round and smooth and they will shuffle great.

Re: Newbie from Europe

I think the clay is the better chip, however you chaps on that side of the pond have to pay 470 pounds for a 500 chip set is a bit steep. 470 pounds is $ 835.66 US for the guys on this side of the pond. Before you decide on your chips, get samples and feel the differences. Then you can make the choice of what chip you like best. There are many reviews in this site that compare chips, and give the high and low points of each chip. I looked up the sites in the UK and Marlow's has the best selection available. Hunting down the perfect chip for you will be worth the effort.

Re: Newbie from Europe

Thanks for the reply.

I know the ones from poker.dk are not clay, but they are labelled like that on the site. The "poker" and "tournament" models do not contain any metal and are injected type opposed to the compressed?!?! from Marlow. Still dont really know the difference...

.dk have other models (AK, suited... design) which contain metal I think, and are described as "clay composite" or "ABS composite" and sound too much metallic to me.

I like the sharp edges from real clay actually . But I dont like the heavy/ metallic sound of the Marlow ceramic. I guess that rules out NJ skulls too...

Re: Newbie from Europe

Also found this review site: www.homepokertourney.com

I also found another description for the sounds of the chips.

My "metallic/hard" = ring sound (which I dont like)
Nice real clay (paulson/keywest) and CLAY.DK = thud sound

Do the NJ skull really have more the "ring" sound? Too bad then...

Re: Newbie from Europe

The NJ Skulls do not have as much of ring sound to them as the chipcos. Personally, I like the sound, feel, and the texture on the NJ Skullls better then chipco's. But I advise you to get samples because everybody has different taste.

Good Luck,
BigDog

Re: Newbie from Europe

I just noticed that my initial post was duplicated. Must have been a conflict document due to editing.
Anyhow, tomb1 posted:

Pokershop:
"clay": http://www.pokershop.dk/shop/productinfo.asp?id=252
11,5g. Read somewhere to be injected moulded and no metal insert (anyone can confirm this?). Nice sound, but slippery. Cheap.

Marlow:
"ceramic", chipco: http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/classic.htm
10g. Ring sound. Rather expensive.

"clay": http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/keywest.htm
http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/deadwood.htm
http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/paulsonclassic.htm
Still expensive, but all around nice thud sound and rough edges.

"R&T": http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/bugsys.htm
Still expensive. Ring. Slippery.

Marlow chip type description: http://poker.marlowcasinochips.com/styles.htm

There is still this clay composite: compression vs. injection moulded, which i am not sure of.
Marlow claims to not having any injection mouled...
