Tourney Chips Question

I normally play micro-limit cash games, so my tourney knowledge is limited. As a result, when I initially built my set I didn't consider the possibility of rebuys. I'm planning to add 50-100 x $25 chips to my existing $0.05/$0.25/$1/$5 Nexgen cash set so we can start each player with $100 in chips, thus keeping the math easy. So I can know how many $25 chips to add, I have a question for those of you who run tourneys often:

In a 10 player NL tourney with unlimited rebuys through the 3rd blind level (40 minutes per level), how many rebuys should my chip set be prepared to handle?

We'll be playing $5.00 buys 100 chips, unlimited rebuys through the 3rd blind level, No Limit. Thanks.

Re: Tourney Chips Question

Rather than buying a ton of low value chips to cover rebuys, you might consider adding a new higher-value chip which you could use for rebuys and colorups. If you already have enough $25's to get started, instead of 50-100 more $25's you could get 50-100 of some new color and make them $20's or even $50's. This way you would only need 5 $20's or 2 $50's per rebuy and the player who re-bought can simply get change from one of the other big-stacked players.

Just something to consider because this would minimize the number of new chips you would have to buy, store, and keep track of plus it would offer you the option of coloring up large stacks in order to make them easier to manage.

I don't have any chips labeled as $25 just yet. My set is primarily a cash-game set of labeled and denominated Nexgens, with 250 each of $0.05, $0.25, $1.00, and $5.00. This allows for 10 players to play any cash-game from $0.10/$0.20 all the way up to $3/$6. Right now, my fellow peasants and I generally play either $0.20/$0.40 or $0.25/$0.50, so this set will serve its cash-game purpose for years to come.

As is, this set will handle a 10-player T100 tourney (25 x $1, 15 x $5) without rebuys. Unfortunately, once rebuys are factored in, there are only 100 x $5 chips left, allowing for only 5 full-entry rebuys. I'm guessing this won't be enough, so I'm going to add a number of $25 chips to accomodate the rebuys...

Basically, what I asking is this: should I buy 50 or 100 chips to make into $25 chips?

Thanks.

Re: Tourney Chips Question

You won't need all that many re-buys - unless you all play fast and loose. $5 at a shot and I might though. If you are getting too many re-buys raise the buy-in and you will get less loose play and therefor less re-buys. 40 $25 chips should be more than plenty at 10 rebuys added to your 5.

I would suggest a seperate set for tournaments so that those knocked out can start a cash game.

Re: Tourney Chips Question

Sorry for misunderstanding your question. If you buy 50 $25 chips this would allow up to 12 players to rebuy, which should be plenty if you are playing 10 players and only allow rebuys for the first two hours. Buying 100 $25 chips would probably be overkill because it would allow you to color up all of your original players, offer 10 rebuys and still have 20 chips left over. I would recommend getting no more than 80 $25 chips because this would give you the exact amount you need to offer 10 full rebuys and color up everything on the table to $25's. You could probably get by very nicely with only 50 or 60 $25 chips - 60 would give you 5 rebuys and a full colorup option.

Thanks for the advice.

I like the seperate tourney/cash sets idea, so I guess I won't be getting rid of my old 11.5g dice chips just yet. A sort of loser's punishment--get knocked out of the tourney and you get to play with crappy chips.
