Chips: 64 | | | Number of Chips for a Cash Set? We mostly play tournament NL holdem, but I'm putting together a Desert Sands cash set that I'd like to be able to support up to 8 people playing $0.25/0.50 & $0.50/$1 Limit Holdem, as well as low-ante 7-card stud, and dealer's choice games. Here's what I'm thinking of getting, but wanted to run this by others with more experience with ring games:
150 - $0.25
100 - $0.50
150 - $1.00
75 - $5.00
25 - $25.00
Does this sound about right? This is one great site, BTW. |

Chips: 201 | | | Re: Number of Chips for a Cash Set? Personally I don't like having a 50 cent chip when you have the 25 cent and dollar chip. I myself would go with 25c, $1, $5, $25 and maybe $100 if you'd need them. I'd probably take away the hundred 50 cent chips and disperse them amongst the rest. But if you like the 50s too then go for it.

Fd | That was my first reaction, too. But after doing a bit of speadsheet twiddling, this seems like a playable set for your intended games. The problem with limit games is that you just need lots and lots of low denom chips. For your games, you get some efficiency out of the 50 cent chips. If you could afford to buy more chips, then I'd definitely recommend dropping the 50cent chips and getting lots more quarters and dollars.
You probably have more $25 chips than you'll use, unless you anticipate a lot of rebuys.

Chips: 111 | | | Re: Number of Chips for a Cash Set? CaptnLego or anyone else, could you crunch this setup on your spreadsheet and let me know what you think?
250 x $1
200 x $5
110 x $25
40 x $100
This will be use for cash limit game max 10 players from 2/4 to max 10/20, but mainly 3/6 or 5/10. Anything I can change to make it better. I already have:
200 x $1
100 x $5
and plan to get 300 more. |

Your set looks OK, but it's pretty tight to spread that range of limit games. Ideally, you'd have a rack of chips for each player, and for this range you'd need racks of different denoms. Then you're talking about a couple thousand chips...
Here's a quick pass on it (just a work-in-process):
(I didn't worry about making the buyins for the 2/4 and 3/6 games nice round numbers, figuring that you had plenty of greens, and not everybody would buyin for the same amount..)
I'm suggesting going with 250 of the $5, and 200 of the $1.
For your games, I think $5 is your main chip. That's the bread-and-butter chip for the 5/10 and 10/20 games, and not too onerous to play and make change in the 2/4 and 3/6 games. So I'd suggest going with 250 reds and 200 whites.
Your green and black chips are basically colorup/rebuy chips. You might run out of these (limit on total bank) with the 10/20 game...
Depending on which chips you're planning to buy... Is there a $2 chip? That would be more efficient for 2/4, and you could play 4/8 with it too... (But since you've already got the $1's, this is probably not an option for you.)
Similarly, if there's a $50 chip, you could consider getting those instead of the $25 and $100, since those are basically colorup/make change chips in your games anyhow. (Getting $50 chips would free some from chipcount from the greens, so you could afford more $5's)
Let me know what you think (can you afford more chips? do you guys buyin for 100BB + rebuys?) and I can update the spreadsheet. Or, if you prefer, you can download the spreadsheet and twiddle numbers yourself.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was debating whether to have 250 $1's or 250 $5's. Per your suggestion I'll go with 250 $5's.
I got the Nevada Jacks DS from the PSO promo. I am planning to add 300 more for now. Right now our cash game is 3/6 mainly but heading towards the 5/10 or 6/12 mark, the 10/20 might come much later down the road. If I need more chips, I would add whatever I need then. At the moment I am using $25 chips from 11.5g to fill in until I order the 2nd NJ chip set. |

Chips: 1,071 | | | Re: Number of Chips for a Cash Set? I have 180 nondenom chipcos that I use for quarter (or $0.50 chips), but mostly as quarters. I find in my typical home game that it is plenty. We play spread limit and no-limit. Spread limit is usually $0.50 to 4, with $0.25 and $0.50 blinds. If you are playing 25¢ and 50¢ limit then you will need a lot more quarters, but I would avoid 50¢ pieces (not crazy about the color of the 50¢ chips from Nevada Jacks either). I guess the blinds are 25¢ and 25¢ for your 25/50¢ limit games.
I agree with everyone above. Have enough 25¢ chips, $1, $5, and if needed $25 chips to cover what you play. |

You should be OK for 6/12, too. You'll just use all your 1's and 5's, and fill out the buy-in with $25's.
