Chips: 108 | | | Why the high denom Tourney Setups? Been here a few months, so I am kind of new here. My question is why most of you guys run high denom tourney chip setups (T10,000). I am kind of from the keep it simple thinking in that I would rather say "I raise $5" rather than $500. Do you just prefer the color of the higher denom's? I will be putting together a T1000 tourney set with pharaohs but was just curious what your guys thoughts were and if there were any advantages/disadvantages to one vs the other.
Also, while I am on the subject and this line of thinking. I never see anyone with a SMALL denom setup (T200?)lol. for tourneys. Ex. (20) $1's, (16) $5's, and (4) $25's. Ratio wise it makes sense to me........ is this something that is stupid or whatever floats your boat you should go with? Thanks in advance for your replies. |

Chips: 195 | | | Re: Why the high denom Tourney Setups? I think it is just a preference thing. having $1, $5 and $10 chips would be the same as having $100, $500, and $1000 chips, just some extra zeros.
Poker on TV may have a lot to do with this also since the end of the tourneys are aired, so the chip count of each player is usually hundreds of thousands.
I personally run a T10,000 tourney just because that's what I started a couple years back and we just keep it the same. It wouldn't be a difficulty transition to a smaller tourney, we would just say "raise 5" rather than "raise 500". So, as I have graduated from chipset to chipset, I have just always kept it the same and I focus on getting 100, 500, and 1000 chips.

The impression I get is that there is a desire to emulate the final table that many members may see on TV, not taking into account that there were probably 600 people that did not make it to that final table who started with T1000 in chips. The allure of pushing millions of pretend dollars 'all-in' seems to have more than a passing attraction even to those views who do not even know how to play poker, but are avid fans of one or more of the weekly poker shows. Chips: 108 | | | Re: Why the high denom Tourney Setups? T.V., that is what was in the back of my mind. I was figuring the ratios for different tourney options to start and as the blinds progressed and didn't really see a whole lot of difference there, so I thought maybe there was something I was missing possibly with chipping up later in the tourney or sumtin'.
Let me know PocketRocket WE'LL DO ER'!!! LOL. |

i started out with a low denom but upgraded to a higher denom...
for me the reasoning was because i wanted to get used to the idea of betting larger amounts of chips...
not having that residual fear of putting that much in the pot...
i play a lot of local tournaments in the cali card rooms and the times i've made it to the final table, the blinds are already 1,000 - 2,000 with 100 (or 500) antes....
its a bit intimidating for a person who is not used to using large amounts.....
i decided to start running larger tourneys (T3500, T5000, T7500, T10000) as opposed to my earliers smallers ones (T600, T700, T1100).....
also, i bought some plaques ($5000) and wanted to incorporate them instead of just using them as coasters....
just my nickel,
got some sense?

Chips: 111 | | | Re: Why the high denom Tourney Setups? TV influence. Also the fact that bet high amounts sounds a lot cooler. Another reason might be conspiracy to selll more chips, you need both a low value cash set and a high value tournament set. |

Chips: 732 | | | Re: Why the high denom Tourney Setups? 4 words: "one hundred million dollars" Just sounds a lot more exciting than "I raise to $1.50". Having said that I got a set of 0.25/1.00/5.00 chips and have a mean T20 setup. Same thing as a T2000 tournament with 25/100/500 but now whether playing a cash game or a tournament the correct chip value is printed on the chip. I agree that TV likely caused this, but find it ironic that the most famous TV event (WSOP main event) gives you 10K in chips for your 10K entry. In that sense my T20 tourneys for $20 is just like the real thing because every $0.25 you bet represents a $0.25 you put in for that chip. |

Chips: 14,152 | | | Re: Why the high denom Tourney Setups? I run a T300 tourney. No one seems to care that its not big denoms like on tv.
I started with my nice 500 dice chip set with 200 white, 150 red, 100 green and 50 black.
My friends are used to casinos having $1 white chips, $5 red chips, etc. to keep it easy to remember and none of them are into poker as much as I am so I think they are cool with whatever structure set up anyway.
So I just kept it simple, start with 1/2 blinds and away we go.
