General Question.

I need some help guys.

I"m trying to figure out how many chips I'll need for approximately 6-10 player tourney and cash games. I was thinking 1000 chips should take care of that. Am I high or low with that estimation, and what should the breakdown on chips be.

I was thinking....

Cash Game
---
150 - .50
50 - 1$

Tournament
---
300 - 5$
400 - 25$
75 - 100$
25 - 500$

Please help me out....Thanks guys

Hi,
I've just been through all that. (I reckon 500 or 650 should be enough).
But anyway some kind soul directed me to http://www.homepokertourney.com/quickstart.htm
I think all your questions should be answered there.
Cheers

check this out

as well as homepokertourney.com

holdempokerchips also has a nice area for chips needed.

Seems to me that you may consider more blacks and purples and less green for your tourney. Cash game is not bad.

What limits do you play in cash games? This doesn't sound like very many chips for those denoms. If you are doing a .5/1 game, you'll want at least a $25 buy in (absolute minimum) but you have $125 in chips; that's only 5 people and no extra buy ins.

You could make the $1 chips into $2 chips. This is more in tune with the standard 4x-5x chip progession scale plus it gives you an extra $50.

May I make a suggestion....

use the denoms 25, 50, 100 and 500. Then they can be quarters, fifty a buck and 5 for your cash games and 25, 50, 100, etc for your tourneys. I know everyone says you dont need 25s and 50s, but it works out really well for both. Also, if you break it down right, you can accomodate a 15 man tourney with 500 chips with everyone starting out with 31 chips and 2000 in chips. You can also accomodate 8 guys in a cash game with $20 each.

I have done this and it works swimmingly.

Thats a good idea but you won't (and shouldn't) use the chips at the same time. For tourneys, there's usually a side game going for those that bust out. Not a good idea to use the same chips for tournies and cash games going on at the same time.

Here's what I don't get. Why not use .25/.50/1/5 as your chip value AND your tournament values if this is the case. Do you really care if you're playing a T3000 tournament or a T30 tournament? It's all the same....

This is a good point. If you're running tournaments AND a side ring game you either need more than 1 set of chips, or assuming that the side ring game is made up of people knocked out of the tournament, they will have access to the smallest value chip after you color up.

One other thing - the chiptalk FAQ article on this is helpful, but I disagree pretty strongly that the lowest chip value should be the normal cash SB and the next should be the BB. This is fine if you only played cash games, but it's MUCH more efficient to use the chip values as SB, 4/5x the smallest chip, 4/5x more, 4/5x more, etc.

Image baby, image is everything.

Who wants to play for $30 when you can play for $3000 or $3,000,000?
