Chips: 305 | | | Proteges in action last night I doubt I'm the first to have used them, but I put the Proteges into action last night.
While the players in my game know little to nothing about poker chips, they expressed a clear appreciation for them. Basically, they seemed to appreciate all of the highlights of the chip: the shaped inlay, the inlay image, the chip colors, the feel of the chips (although I don't think anybody commented on the cigar and snifter mold). These comments were made randomly throughout the game, without any prompting on my part.
A chiptalker who plays in my home game, Warewulf, was impressed with them as well, remarking that they are, in his opinion, the nicest chips to have ever hit the home market. I'd have to agree with him there. He very much liked the subdued colors of the chips (as opposed to the flashy colors of some chip sets).
Based on the above, I suspect that these chips are going to be a great success for Sidepot.
Two things I should note though. The first player to show up to the game started casually checking out the chips and seemed to notice immediately that the inlay design was more prominent on the $25 chip. This player also noticed immediately that the inlay design could not be discerned on the $1000 chip. And this is someone who was casually looking at the chips (and not a chiptalker). Also, Warewulf pointed out that because the $500 chip is the same purple color as the purple edge spots on the $100 chip, a $500 chip was able to get mixed in to his stack of $100s and that exact thing happened to me later in the game.
Overall, I would say the Protege line is a winner. Congrats to Stephan and Sidepot. |

Chips: 102 | | | Re: Proteges in action last night I feel like you do about the chips. They are the best home chips right now. If I had to nitpic I would say that the edgespot selection on the $100 could have been better. |

SidePot is hoping the chips will be a success market wise. BC's failure to deliver in a timely manner is going to impact the sale of them IMO. Being $1.20-1.50 each is the problem, though $1.20 isn't bad if you buy 1000. The chip market crashed during the big delay of them hitting the market. |

I have never had the privilege of visiting a real casino yet, but several of my players have been to AC, LV, or both. Everyone raved about how nice the new chips were and many said that the Proteges were nicer than any chip they had ever played with or seen in a real casino. In fact one of my players said that between my custom table and the new chips, he'd rather play at my house over a real casino any day. You can't get much more complementary than that. |

Though it's funny, the sort of "chip education" that's taking place in my home game. Between Warewulf bringing his chips over and the new chips I "occasionally" acquire, there ends up being a good amount of "chip talk" that takes place in the game, much of which seems to reflect genuine positive interest on the part of the other players. Still, though they express admiration for the chips, I think they think that Warewulf and I are crazy for what we pay for poker chips. They're probably right. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
