Thanks for the pix. Can you tell us more about the jockey mold chips? How do they compare to the ASM and Paulsons? |

Chips: 82 | | | Re: Some chip pron from a newbie The view out of my window? Just some more apartment buildings, some forrest and the city center and Tampere icon Näsinneula itself on the Horizon a little further left, not seen from that angle. The picture was taken during that blue moment after sunset on a foggy day.
Yes, I'll try to get more samples. Atleast from Bluechip. And a look to the member to member sales forum showed me there's really a lot to choose from, current or old genuine casino chips, and all kinds of one time specials of past you've done. If I'm gonna spend a dollar per chip, or actually a lot more shipped to Finland through customs, I'd really like some custom made chips, or atleast not those somewhat common and boring Paulson home chips. The Paulson hot stamp looked nice though. And as I said already, the group buys seem promising, I'll keep an eye on them.
And then there's that jockey mold chip of mine. I'm not really an expert (yet), but I really like em. I tried to identify it some time last year, found a website with tons of different molds and there it was, a jockey mold apparently from John Huxley. I don't have a scale on hand, but the chips are quite light, in the same ballpark with super diamonds and ASMs. The one Paulson chip I have is clearly heavier. The jockey's surface texture comparing to different ASM molds feels closest to A-mold under my finger nail, but a little smoother. Not nearly as slick as SQs. They do grip nicely anyway and feel very good in hand. Speaking of smell and taste, they do have a little coin smell (still) in them.
I'm not a big fan of the (brand new sample of) Pharaoh-Paulson chip, but it might be just the fact I don't have a stack of them to play with. The material is somehow too hard with still sharp edges and it feels even a little plasticy with the smooth area over the inlay. These Huxley chips were taken by my dad maybe 20 years ago from a cruise ship running between Finland and Sweden. Ten Finnish Marks of that time each. I have also those 25 or so brown roulette chips from the same time and place. They have a completely smooth surface, but grip amazingly anyway. Don't know anything more about the material, a bit heavier chip than the Jockeys. Some old Huxley model also I assume.

Chips: 82 | | | Re: Some chip pron from a newbie Just letting you know, it didnt't take me but this long to order some more samples. Good job on insisting on doing so guys. =)
I chose sample sets of Blue Chips solid Capone's, James Bond Blue Chips and those beautiful Paulson Private Cardroom's, plus even a few Chipco ceramics. I guess I'll have a better view on what I want after these arrive. Atleast about the manufacturers. |

Chips: 82 | | | Re: Some chip pron from a newbie Are you ready for some more!?
Ready or not, here I go! =)
Received the samples today and naturally had to take some photos too... Part II - http://www.cs.tut.fi/~pennane2/pokeri/poker2.html
I'll write about my feelings of them to another post below, but the shots are there already. The Paulsons are actually brighter than they seem in the photos, definitely the most colorful ones of the bunch, don't know why it doesn't show...

Chips: 82 | | | Re: Some chip pron from a newbie - updated january 18th Okay.. What did I think. I had read a lot of your comments about the differences between clays while waiting to get my samples, and not so surprisingly a lot seems true.
My main interest was Blue Chips, as I've already made some mock-ups for a custom order from them. Their clay really does feel and sound like pottery when comparing to Paulson and ASM. I'd think that means they also break easily, but they are actually the hardest one of them all according to you folks? Ok.. That's bad news regarding shuffling, as the sharp edges make it not so pleasant. They are on the light side in weight, but it doesn't really bother me much. Neither does the flame mold. The colors are quite muted, but I assume oiling them helps a lot. Have to test that. Some of the inlays are clearly not round, another thing I had read already. But I read also that their quality has improved greatly after these were manufactured. And I'm getting a hot stamp set anyway. They do feel a lot more hand made than especially the Paulsons. I think I'll be really happy with a custom set of these despite all the small flaws.
How about the Paulsons. The reference everything is compared against. They look really good. Colors are nice and bright. Even a little surprisingly for otherwise such classy looking chips. The material is really soft, as one of my chips is already chipped pretty badly. This new mold is a lot nicer than that "Paulson chips" mold. I could have a set of these and enjoy em, but am not so sure about Pharaoh's and those other similar sets.. But these didn't give me that "must get" feeling either some of you might have had. Maybe Paulsons just aren't to my taste. At least not the home versions.
I had already committed to clays after the somewhat letdown feeling of NJ Skulls, but the Chipcos are surprisingly good. They grip a lot better than Jacks and look really sharp. It's good to know I can get some ceramics one day after a few sets of clays, if this madness goes that far.
So the big question. Custom clays, two choices, both with pros and cons and a completely different feel... I'm quite close to make a BC order, as my mock-ups in that other thread look good to me already. I simply want to use those wonderful edge spots this time although ASM make a nice chip also. I just can't afford their chip with inlays and multicolored spots right now. I'll clear a few more questions with mr. Endy and I'm ready to go. This doesn't have to be my last set of chips, but I want them rather sooner than later, as I went and sold my Nevada Jacks set already. :) They weren't meant for me. |

This really is an addictive forum. I haven't spent more than a few days without checking for new messages several times a day during my two month stay here.
Since the last comments I desided on the PI clays with my custom flowery theme, as most of you have probably already seen on the other threads. And I bought some miscellaneous chips from a fellow member too. Here's some photos of those. http://www.cs.tut.fi/~pennane2/pokeri/index.html
