Too late. Already sanded off the varnish.
It's cheap wood. There's no doubt in my mind. Very soft. 220 grit sandpaper tears right through it. I basically just sanded it enough to get the varnish off.
It was also in rough shape when it arrived. Not from shipping, but from obvious years of being handled, dropped, knocked about and so on. It's also warped and will require uneven feet applied to the bottom to make it level.
The cards were modern. Meaning you could buy both of these decks new and they probably wouldn't smell or feel as bad as the ones that came with it. They aren't collectable, so in the trash they go.
Even if the thing were worth ten times what I paid for it ($10) I wouldn't change a thing. It would still be sanded, just as it is now. And would still end up on my coffee table, as it's going to be soon. Plus, I might actually be even happier then. Because I would have paid only $10 for a $100 chip rack. LOL

It came with no pedigree and I'm not really interested anyway. It's mine now and that makes me happier than knowing where it's been. Frankly if some famous person was playing with these featherweight wooden chips, then I doubt they were famous
and rich. LOL

I understand about keeping it for you.........but what about your heirs, what are they gonna do with it maybe even more rare then. |
Who says my heirs are getting anything?
I suspect this rack is older than it is valuable. It was clearly made mostly by machine (as opposed to having been cut/assembled by hand) and wasn't even that well made anyway. The slots where the chips sit are rough inside as though they were never thoroughly sanded.
If this thing was a handmade hardwood rack, with quality features, I would agree with you totally. As it is, it is now just a nice display rack for some ASM circle/square chips that I'm ordering this week or next. But I do appreciate your concern.
I also doubt this rack is unique, since again it was made by a company in a factory. There must be more out there like this. But it was unique to me. I have not seen the single row version like this before, only double row versions and the classic round style. This was exactly what I was looking for to keep 80 - 100 of my chips out where they could be handy for a quick game without getting out the rest of the chips.
Cheers!
