Did you ever win something on eBay. And you were all excited, because the picture(s) made it look really cool? And you could hardly wait for it to arrive by mail? And when it did arrive you could hardly stop yourself from ripping the box open like a kid on Christmas morning. But then when you looked at the actual item you were totally crushed because it was nothing like what you'd been hoping for? Has this happened to anyone?

Well, I'm happy to report it didn't happen to me... at least on this item.

The chip rack arrived today and it's most definitely wood. I guess I should have taken the bet at 2 to 1 odds. ops:

As Jimmy Blowout correctly guessed, it's made sort of like a chopping block or one of those blocks that sit on the counter to hold your carving knives. In this case it's just two pieces of wood (some kind of softwood I think) that have been joined. You can see the difference in color in the original eBay pic above. I'm going to take some better pics, then I'm going to sand it down a bit and give it a light coat of oil. It's old, it's kind of beat up, but it has a lot of character to it. I never intend to sell it, so I'm not concerned about keeping it in "original" condition.

Oh... and the seller was complete in that she sent the two decks of cards. Yikes! Dirty and smelly cards... and not even that old, that's all they are. They're going straight in the garbage.

The chips (in case you're curious) are also wood. Very light. Probably no more than 3 - 4 grams each.

I'll post before and after pics at some point when I've finished cleaning it up.

Cheers!
Allan

Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. Its always good to hear Ebay has something other than junk for sale.

EEEEK...........don't refininsh it till you know what it may be worth, and with the matching chips and cards, you may have a rare collectible that is worth many times the price you paid. You may want to research this a bit first.

If you can link it to a famous person from history somehow even more $$$

I would at least consider doing some research before I refinished it.

I understand about keeping it for you.........but what about your heirs, what are they gonna do with it maybe even more rare then.

Too late. Already sanded off the varnish.

It's cheap wood. There's no doubt in my mind. Very soft. 220 grit sandpaper tears right through it. I basically just sanded it enough to get the varnish off.

It was also in rough shape when it arrived. Not from shipping, but from obvious years of being handled, dropped, knocked about and so on. It's also warped and will require uneven feet applied to the bottom to make it level.

The cards were modern. Meaning you could buy both of these decks new and they probably wouldn't smell or feel as bad as the ones that came with it. They aren't collectable, so in the trash they go.

Even if the thing were worth ten times what I paid for it ($10) I wouldn't change a thing. It would still be sanded, just as it is now. And would still end up on my coffee table, as it's going to be soon. Plus, I might actually be even happier then. Because I would have paid only $10 for a $100 chip rack. LOL

It came with no pedigree and I'm not really interested anyway. It's mine now and that makes me happier than knowing where it's been. Frankly if some famous person was playing with these featherweight wooden chips, then I doubt they were famous and rich. LOL

Who says my heirs are getting anything?

I suspect this rack is older than it is valuable. It was clearly made mostly by machine (as opposed to having been cut/assembled by hand) and wasn't even that well made anyway. The slots where the chips sit are rough inside as though they were never thoroughly sanded.

If this thing was a handmade hardwood rack, with quality features, I would agree with you totally. As it is, it is now just a nice display rack for some ASM circle/square chips that I'm ordering this week or next. But I do appreciate your concern.

I also doubt this rack is unique, since again it was made by a company in a factory. There must be more out there like this. But it was unique to me. I have not seen the single row version like this before, only double row versions and the classic round style. This was exactly what I was looking for to keep 80 - 100 of my chips out where they could be handy for a quick game without getting out the rest of the chips.

Cheers!
Allan

Very happy indeed. I've had lots of good eBay purchases over the last few years. But I can honestly say this is one that I'm truly pleased with. You can see my lighthearted rant above in response to Cytoviper's concerns about the potential value of this thing. To me it's now become very valuable, but not for monetary reasons. I believe some things are meant to be used, not sit behind glass and left to collect dust. I refinished a 35 year old bicycle last fall for exactly the same reason. Had I left it in original condition, it would still be hanging on a wall rusting away. Today it gets me back and forth from work everyday. It was meant to be used.

Later,
Allan

I've had the wooden rack (mentioned at the top of this thread) for quite a while now, but I figured until my new circle/square chips arrived there was just no point taking any more pictures of it.

My chips arrived yesterday, so I filled it up and got some fresh pics of it.

Here's the before and after shots:

As I think I noted earlier, it only holds about 92 chips, but the point of getting it wasn't to hold all 500 of my circle/squares, but rather to keep some of them out where they could be seen and enjoyed.

The chips aren't oiled yet, but I still really like how the colors look next to each other and also how they look against the natural wood color of the rack itself.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It looks great sitting on our coffee table. Of course, I'm even more happy to finally own some 'real' chips.

Regards,
Allan B.

I went to the Bombay Company site and it is listed at $134. Did you have to use a special code to get it for under $90?
