Help with chip storage...please!!!
I need to figure out the best way to store 1400 of PGI Edgespot Clays that I ordered today as part of the 2nd group buy. Once they arrive I pretty much don't have anything to keep them in, except possibly an old aluminum case that can store 500 chips (that came with dice chips awhile ago).
I was thinking about just acrylic racks, but from all the posts I've read, there isn't really an option that holds 20 china clay chips per row. If I'm wrong, please correct. I think I saw a recent post from Joe at PGI that said they have some coming in, but will be atleast 45-60 days minimum before they arrive, which means I will be without anything for awhile if I wait.
So I was thinking about wooden trays. I've read many positive reviews about Sven (Oz woodworking), and have tried to contact him a few times via e-mail and phone over the past few weeks, but have yet to hear from him. I would assume he has been busy. Not sure if anyone else out there may be efficient with woodworking that would be interested in helping me, or may be able to direct me into making my own. I was thinking 2 700 chip trays (7 rows of 100), with 4 small notches in each row to seperate the rows of 100 into 5 barrels of 20 chips for easy distribution. And they would have handles to make it easy to bring the trays to the table for color ups. Also, I was thinking that it would be best for the chips for the wood trays to be lined with felt or something.
They will mostly be used at my house. There may be a few occasions that I bring them to a friends, but it wouldn't be the norm.
The biggest thing is that cost is a consideration. Besides having just ordered chips, I'm on a relatively tight budget. I haven't worked in 2 years due to a car accident, and the only reason I'm purchasing these chips is due to my family/friends generosity as a christmas/birthday present this year, since poker has been one of my outlets. That being said, I don't want the money being spent on the chips go to waste by not being stored properly.
Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

Then just order the bigger racks when they come in to fit 20 a row. Check out this link for a little more info. I believe they are cheaper for chiptalk members than what is posted on the PGI website. This way you can just order the carriers with your chip order.

Of course there are a ton of options out their depending on what you are looking for.

If you decide to order acrylic carriers (birdcages), I suggest that you consider ordering 2 x 1000-pc carriers. You can store 800 chips in one and 600 in the other if you like matching stacks in each, or put 700 in each. This will give you room for expansion, and the two carriers will be the same height (looks better IMO). Also, the prices for 600-pc and 400-pc carriers are so close to the price of the 1000-pc carriers that you may as well get the ones with the larger capacity. I'm used to seeing these carriers used as fill carriers in casinos with sometimes as little as one rack of chips in them, so the empty space doesn't bother me at all.
That said, the little ones are really cute. I don't find them to be very practical, but they are so darned cute. (I don't own any of the small ones.)

Re: Help with chip storage...please!!!
Thanks guys. I had originally considered the bird cages, but then didn't know because the acrylic racks wouldn't fit the chips originally, and then didn't know once I did order the new racks from PGI (when available), if they would fit in the cages or not. The other downside, is that I'm ordering 40 racks (if I went with 2 1,000 count cages) becuase I would have to purchase the regular and then the larger ones when available. So for simple math; $45 x2 for bird cages, and at roughly $1.50 per acrylic rack x 40...that's $150 plus shipping. I figured I could do 2 wooden trays for less than that. I know I can't afford a full wooden case for all the chips. I also have a few 60 mm dealer buttons on order from Sal and Old West Poker Supplies and 10 94 mm plaques.
I'm just trying to figure out the most economical option, while keeping my chip investment protected.

The most economical option would undoubtedly be to use three el cheapo aluminum cases like the one you already have, wouldn't it?

here's another option.
1000 PC Poker Chip Storage Tray
some casinos use these also, when they are removing all chips from a table, like when the layout is being replaced. the cage cashiers might also use them too.

This.
PGI was selling a box (3) of 650 piece cases a while back for pretty cheap. You may not get them at that price, but I ordered a set, and they are more than sufficient.

How do you know your chips won't fit the racks? The only China Clays of mine that don't fit 20 to a row are the Dunes. My Pharaohs fit fine.
