What size chip box do you prefer?

Recently, I have accumulated lots of quality wood, specifically some nice oak that I found for free. Wifey wants me to use it for something now that I'm unemployed.

I'm thinking about building a box for carrying chip, and was wondering what you consider a useful size.
I know that the first answer usually is "Whatever you need" so no need to say that.
I have seen plenty of cases for sale or WTB at 400 or 600 chips, but that does not mean that they are best.
What are your needs?

edit: I was also thinking about making it so that standard acrylic racks would fit.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

I am currently looking to purchase (2) 400 chip cases. 1-cash, 1-tourny. This will force me to keep both sets limited to a reasonable 400 pcs which is just enough for a 10-player 1-table game, even with rebuys. I also am getting 1 500 pc case for my chipco cash set (for my non-clay friendly players). From now on, I will always match a travel case to my set size. They are easy to store, easy to move. 400 chips is about the right weight I want to move around.

*Would be nice to get a travel case that held a plastic box of copags.

Definitely go this route. I don't understand why more cases aren't made to hold racks.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

If this is going to be for a set of chips that you'll be taking to and fro, I say 500 max. If it's for storing/displaying a set, even though I'm not supposed to, I say whatever you need (in my case...haha...I need a 700 chip case).

I vote for 500.

I thought about making my own racks, but getting them to be an exact for would be too labor intensive. Frankly, I'm too lazy.
This way, If it turns out good, I could make more using the same plans.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

If for display purposes, having a framed glass top would be nice. For travel, it needs to be very strong as well. The other thing that might be nice is a flap inside over the chips that would keep them in place if someone dropped the case and breaks it wide open.

I would think that the option of 600 chips would be ideal and 4 decks of cards.

But I wonder if anyone would transport their chips in a wood case? Those cheap aluminum things can take abuse but wood just gets damaged too easily.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

To me, a useful set for a 10-20 person game (tournament or cash) is > 400 but < 600. My sets are around 500, but I always have just a little over, so I need 500+ cases.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

I 600 chip sets for cash and tourney. I have a case like this:

And it is great. Not to bulky, can preload the racks with starting stacks and it is easy to slide under the table out of the way.

Re: What size chip box do you prefer?

Nice, but it is hard for me to make that case out of the mahogany plank in my garage.
