Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

Does anyone have a problem with having their chips stored and going in and out of a case that has a harder surface for holding the chips such as wood or plastic rather than a softer surface (felt)?

Always felt like the harder surfaced holders could potentially do harm to the chips (chipping, scratching, etc.)??? Am I crazy???!!!

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

I wouldn't think that it would matter much. But what do I know?

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

Clay chips are subject to thousands of pounds of pressure when the mold is applied. I don't think they are that fragile. But sometimes we play over ceramic tile and I worry about the chip chipping if it is dropped on the tile. Most storage methods should be perfectly safe for chips.

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

Are your trays flat bottom or rounded?
I doubt that the chips weigh enough to do any damage if the trays are the proper size.
Forcing a chip into a tray that is slightly small could cause premature wear.

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

If there were two cases of equal value, I'd choose the felt-lined one.

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

I don't think it matters, as long as the case is designed to put even pressure on the chips. In fact, in most cases I've seen there is no prossure from above on the chips, so they're just sitting there under their own minimal weight. No big deal as far as I can see. And casino chips are typically stored in their (hard) plastic racks several racks high, which is much more pressure than a case.

Besides, a felt surface glued onto wood isn't really soft, not like storing the chips in foam or anything.

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

good points...a little paranoia on my part I'm sure!!! All said, I think I am going to go with a couple of the black felt-lined cases that PI was selling a while back...found someone with a couple extra of them!

I do love the deluxe vinyl 500 chip cases as well...

Was thinking about getting a nice wood case to stay at the home for display purposes...Anyone have a suggestion for a good 1000 or 750 piece wood case???

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

I have both, but presonally prefer wood. I'm not worried about the chips at all, the wood looks great, and the felt will wear out faster than both.

I prefer bird cages for storage/display, but I would go with one of these if I wanted wood:

Re: Felt Lined vs. Hard (wood or plastic)

Given the choice of course, felt but I don't think it matters at all. Look at the plastic trays, aluminium trays, wooden trays. They are all hard surface.
