Re: First attemp at a custom chip case

I didn't see any kind of clasp, or locking mechanism. Is there one?
Nice fit and finish too.

Magical! And I note someone is a smoker. Not many of us left...not sure if that's because of the anti-smoking movement or because we tend to depart this world early because of our unhealthy habit.

Re: First attemp at a custom chip case

Here are a couple more of a case built the same way with a simple latch and engraving. the first case had no latch or locking mech.

I have one in process for tonypap that will house 39mm and 43mm chips made from Bubinga, hope you don't mind tony

The smoking is from my Friday night game. I quit 5 years ago and my wife 1 year ago.

I'm not real sure on the man hours for the build. I really enjoy it and time kinda flys by.

Re: First attemp at a custom chip case

How do you get such a nice smooth finish on this?

Re: First attemp at a custom chip case

Bubinga is VERY hard so keep your router bits clean and sharp. After that it's a lot of sanding. On the chip racks I don't like to use poly/lacquer or any type of finish like that. These trays have tung oil on them (which is much better for the chips) as long as your surface is very smooth add a few coats of oil and buff, presto. It is a great product for enhansing wood without changing it's color.

I don't mind....have any more pics?!?!?! Any updates on the engraving? What are the chances the grooves can be filled with enamel or something that will fill the groove and give it a flat finish even with the actual surface of the box?

Re: First attemp at a custom chip case

Have you considered using quadrant box hinges?:

Solid Brass Small-Box Hinges - Rockler Woodworking Tools

They really are worth the trouble, and help distinguish your projects from the ordinary.

Pretty funny! Nice hinges, but this box lenick made is far from ordinary, hinges or no hinges....in fact, it's beautiful.

Yes, It's a nice case, and maybe ordinary wasn't the best choice of words. But lenick himself called it his 'first attempt', somewhat hinting that another attempt might follow. I made a recommendation toward an improvement, nothing more.
