Re: First Custom Chip Tray - PICS

Thanks Tom. Sorry you couldn't make the trip up. Just to see my friends shop would have been worth it. He converted a 3 car garage in his basement to his shop. Everything has dust extractors and the whole room turns the air over 4 times per hour. Cleanest woodshop I've ever seen. His equipment makes all the difference: proper tools + his knowhow = quick production. Most of our time was spent prepping the wood for the Shopbot. The sides did take some time too - many trips through the thickness planer.

ButtonPotato, no plans to offer these for sale. My friend might (and I mean might) have a price, but I would expect it to be quite high. He had to take a day away from his mandolin work just to mess around with me as it was. He did get 2 trays for himself out of the deal though for his 1300 St. Joes.

The choice of wood is fantastic! I shudder when I think of how much all that wood would cost, though.

Very nice! I am having a custom Walnut case with Curly Maple inlays built by a friend who sounds just like your friend. Now I can't wait!

Thanks guys.

Phil, the curly maple against the dark walnut should be sweet. Post some pics when you get it.

Brake,
Most people don't realize how much time goes into this kind of work.
If we ever charged more than a couple bucks per hour, the cost per rack would be unaffordable.
That's why I stick to a few special ones; sell some, give some away in lotteries.

So ture. If I tried to charge folks for the time alone I would never sell anything. It's just the way things are in a would of mass produced (but still high quality) goods. Technology has pretty much replaced the value of true hand made items.

Re: First Custom Chip Tray - PICS

Sparky and Ranman are right on the money here. Sanding time alone was brutal. I really enjoyed the whole process though. Hard to explain the satisfaction of making something like this and seeing it turn out well. I will certainly try some other projects as the mood strikes.

Re: First Custom Chip Tray - PICS

Brakedust, nice tray. I know it's a lot of work. I had thought of building some with my Shopbot too, but with deals like this one on 5stardeal.com it's not worth it. I'm kicking around some ideas for some not-so-typical chip trays. Anyway, here's the link.
