Custom Chip Carrier

I drew this a few months ago with the intention of making my own custom chip set carrier.
Upon pricing all the tools I needed to actually do this right, I decided to release these drawings out here to everyone and see if someone with SKILLS and TOOLS can implement what I got here.

I have no idea how big a table saw blade you might need to do some of these angled cuts. I also do not know if there's a full height drill press that can do 13" tall drill lengths with precision.

So, BIG DISCLAIMER: this is a flight of fancy, let's see if someone can actually build this freakshow. (Or if someone wants to.)

Just don't go running off and making lots of them for profit without PM'ing me first.

500 chipset carrier:

Note, the 500 has issues with the handle location. someone else more nuttier than me can fiddle with the location.

Re: Custom Chip Carrier

okaaaaaaaaay...

How about this, anyone have any comments/suggestions on how to build this with physical limitations in mind?
As I said in OP, don't have much of a grasp on limitations of common drill presses and table saws.

Re: Custom Chip Carrier

If I had the tools (and talent) i would do it. I think it would be cool. it would be kinda neat to have a fitted leather cover around it too.

Re: Custom Chip Carrier

Missed this last month. Short answer: "Ask peterod"

Slightly longer answer: I'd probably do it with a jig and a bandsaw if my table saw wouldn't cut that deep. Yes, a standard shop-quality drill press should bore those holes accurately.

I don't have any woodworking tools, just jobsite stuff. My finest tool is a router.

Looking at it again I would try to rework the design to use a build-up process (laminated with glue). Variances in single blocks of wood could create a) kindling on the shop floor or b) some weakness that doesn't appear until you have it loaded with chips and are walking down the street.

That would suck.
I think that this really is a bit of a pipe dream, but has that boastful "it's one single piece of wood" feeling about it.

I think that I should rethink this using only a router and a circular saw.... and mutiple pieces of wood.

Re: Custom Chip Carrier

I would tend to agree with the one block of wood not being a good idea. Wood can split or crack from humidity changes, laminating it will create a stronger piece. It's hard to tell how a piece of wood will react, just a bit of twisting and it'll be junk.

How about acrylic, or another plastic....not as classy as wood, but different.

Well, if you wanted to do it in one block of wood, you'd do it in something fairly dense at first (like oak) and then go for it in something actually dense, like ebony or burlwood (if burlwood even comes that large, for all I know it's a certain layer of the certain tree).

Even that much ebony would cost as much as the custom clay chips to carry inside it, probably more. Burlwood? jeez. You'd have to just buy Dunes if you had a case like that.

Laminations can be beautiful all on thier own. I've seen some small, delicate ones that make me think of a fine rose inlay. Check out some of the things they do with custom, all wood sailing ship spars (I think that's the piece that holds the bottom together... the one all the ribs are cross-attached to, inline with the keel). Some of them look really dramatic and were never intended to be "beautiful", they are laminated with that combination of wood for function. I find them to be accidental beauty sometimes.

I'm curious. I'd like to try it if you found a design that "fit" contracor tools. Router table and tablesaw. All kinds of lamination patterns could be possible.
