I figured about 3 1/2 lbs. per tray fully loaded with 100 chips each. (using 2 1/4 lb for board foot of pine. heavier wood, heavier trays)
Seems straighforward, but I am no woodworker. Router with a core box router bit and maybe some dowels and these trays should be cake.......... | Nice design. The infill piece could be a problem to make since the router does not cut a square end.

It's just something to keep the 25 chips in separate bunches.

Mizuchaud | This is what my box of 100 chips looks like.
The ones that ended up too short, i.e. 99 chips long ended up as chopsticks boxes that we gave out as gifts.

It's just something to keep the 25 chips in separate bunches. | I square groove from a straight router bit would work. Then a piece of wood could be glued in place to separate the chips.

Then again, I don't want box edges on mine....just straight chip racks.

Chips: 329 | | | Re: Custom Wood Chip Racks.... I am almost done with these drawer racks for Wedge.
Three are pine while two are ash.
I need to clean up the edges a bit, sand, then clear-coat them.
These are far easier than the typical 100 chip racks. I don't have to stop and reposition the wood block as often.
Some of my practice ones are in the background.

Chips: 1,298 | | | Re: Custom Wood Chip Racks.... Nice, Sparky, love the duct tape air funnel on that router....
My heart still skips a beat when I see nice chips around power tools.
Given the ease of not having to reposition the router, wouldn't it be nice to now think up of a wood birdcage and handle design to slip these trays onto?
It would look more like a tool box than a birdcage..... long, low and lean............

I had to put the chips in to check the depth of the grooves and to give the pictures some concept of size. Each color is in stacks of 20. Disclaimer: No chips were harmed in the filming or creation of these racks!
You gave me a good idea for a case that would fit these, thanks.
I can make the racks four grooves wide and 50 chips deep. That would keep the size more manageable.

Chips: 3,968 | | | Re: Custom Wood Chip Racks.... Sparky, those racks rock... they will work perfect for chip cabinet.
Let me say this to you....you don't have to sand minor imperfections... and you certainly don't have to clear coat them... They are going to be used inside drawers... I need them to hold the chips and that's it.
I appreciate the attention to details, I just don't want to overburden you with making a beautiful product that is going to be rarely seen. Naked wood is fine with me (unless you know something I don't, being a woodworker and all -- one does not have a drill press like that without being a woodworker...).
One question: These are going to sit at an slight angle in the drawer, front end higher (one, so gravity will hold them tight and 2 so I can see the faces when I open the drawer). I had thought of just tacking a flat piece of wood to the back (lower) end to make sure the chips stand upright, and a slim piece of wood underneath the front end to set the angle. Does that sound like it'll work, or do you have any other suggestions?
