Maybe just lay 2 x 4's down and drill 'em out... the long way! | I've seen a lot of construction tools in my industry, but never a drill bit with a 10 foot throw. |

It only needs an 8-foot throw...

Yes, the top is glass (at least for now). It will eventually be replaced by a custom laser engraved top made from solid cherry.
Is the box oversized? Not really. It's around 12" x 10" x 8" It could hold 12 trays if I wanted but I have my cards and dealer button stored in there as well.
How do I get the chips in and out? That's a design issue I struggled with for a while before I started building the case. wanted to keep the box as compact as possible so I made it the same width as the trays. I just put three trays in full and for the forth tray I remove two stacks of chips (rows 2 & 4). That allows me to grab the tray and drop it place and then replace the chips. |

Droooooool.
Trying to imagine how you carry the 2x4 around with one side full of chips....

I got an idea from your router suggestion, but more like a stacked bento box idea.
You want me to PM you an image of the drawing or post it here?
Can do either tomorrow around lunch when I get the time to draft it up.
I've been thinking about router bit vs. drill press, and I don't forsee getting a press but could possibly borrow a router, so wanted to see what you thought.
Have you considered the practicality of making a row 100 chips long?
Isn't the nice part of a typical 10 or 20 deep rack the fact that you can grab a row with one hand?
just thinking out loud.

Actually, I made two boxes for Noel that each held 100 chips. They are about 13" long. The mistakes that I made are now being used as chopsticks boxes.
A rack for 100 is useful for storing chips before stacking them on the felt. They would also be useful for displays or shipping.
Go ahead and post your idea so that if anyone can improve it we all can benefit.
I don't feel like making 200 racks for people, plus I don't have the time right now.
I am more interested in making a few custom racks.
My favorite wood so far is the red cedar. The aroma from it is amazingly powerful.
Oh, by the way, my round of golf was terrible. Worst round (9 holes) in two years.

The thing that is missing in this sketch is the pivoting handle that you can attach to one of the trays. Then you can stack say, 5 trays up and carry it bento box style.
I figured about 3 1/2 lbs. per tray fully loaded with 100 chips each. (using 2 1/4 lb for board foot of pine. heavier wood, heavier trays)
Seems straighforward, but I am no woodworker. Router with a core box router bit and maybe some dowels and these trays should be cake..........
