| Re: Poker Chip Case I bought a case very similar to these at my local BJ's for $60 (which included 500 dice chips I gave to a friend). It is slightly different from the cases linked, but I thought that since no one else has any thoughts about that case, I would chime in and describe mine. (And for those of you who have BJ's Warehouses around, you might want to pick one up if you like the sound of it.)
Mine is pretty to look at (slightly different design on lid than the others), but not very portable: the brass recessed handles on the side have a rather sharp interior, which makes lifting it difficult. And, of course, the weight of the thing with 500 Pharaohs inside make the sharpness of the edge bite into the fingers. I hope this is making sense -- the sides have what are basically recessed holes finished with brass, like a brass frame around the holes. And the brass around the holes is sharp (not knife-sharp, but still), not smooth. It's hard to tell from the online pictures whether or not the hardware on the sides is the same, but the hinges and the front handle look nearly identical. And I would not trust the front handle to hold the weight. (Not even going to try!)
The interior of the case has an upper tray that lifts out like the one in the pictures linked. But mine also has smaller trays -- three on top, two in the bottom -- that lift out of the main tray or the bottom part. Each tray holds 100 chips in loose stacks of 25 (26 actually fits better in each row, but that is, of course, ridiculous). And, of course, the bottom has room for cards (not quite enough room for a set-up of KEMs, Copag set-up is very snug, almost doesn't fit). All the trays, the top tray and the smaller 100-chip trays come out of the case very easily.
Overall, the case has a decent laquer finish with a fuzzy velveteen-like interior (mine is dark red, not green). But it is not at all a portable case. Yet it's a nice enough case as long as it has a place to sit.
I would love to see how it compares to the mahogany cases, but I don't have one of those yet. I think it was probably just worth the $60 I paid for it. Hope this information helps someone! |
