I orderd a couple of each denom from Cardroomsupply.com of the WSOP replicas. I like them generally but the colors on the face of the chips are not as bright as those on the edges. Should I do anything to bring the colors out? The photos I've seen on-line seem more crisp and bright, but my samples are chalky and a little dull looking. They're still very nice chips!
The trouble with oiling ceramics is that the surface porosity is much lower than clays. So it isn't very effective, nor does it last for any meaningful amount of time.
I tried car wax once, and while it brought out the colors a bit- it also made the chip much slicker...
I'm glad I only did a couple, as it took a long time to strip the wax off without messing up the surface. An exercise I care not to repeat, nor can I recommend.
2. I also tried a little mineral oil one night, and I was surprised at the result. It actually brightened them more than I expected. It was quite nice--kinda like furniture polish does to wood. But I had to rub them quite hard to remove the slickness from the oil, and that took some (but not all) of the shine away.
3. The other thing is this -- many pictures of Chipcos are scans, with the bright scanner bulb shining straight up at the face. The colors are brightest this way. In actual use, we look at chips from an angle, and the slightly rough surface reflects light differently at an angle vs. a straight-on scan, so the chips are not quite as bright. This is more pronounced with NJs vs. Chipcos IMO.
4. The edges, on the other hand, are not textured. They are hard and smooth and the colors are much shinier. You would not want the faces to be this smooth or they would slip & slide too much.
It is probably the "matte" finish that you don't like.
This is a slightly textured plastic clear coat on the face to hide scuffs and fingerprints.
In my business (tradeshow graphics) we use a lamination called "deep crystal" that is really similar to the Chipco coating to put over the top of graphics.
It is not the best for color, but is the best for durability.
Gloss is the best for color, but the worst for showing wear and tear.
