My 1100 horseheads from the GB are here now, so I definitely have something to practice on this weekend!

Chips: 1,650 | | | I know this is going to sound really, really, really stupid, ....but....why don't you just soak a rag in oil, then wring it out and rub it on the chips?? Then you can use a second rag to wipe off the excess??
Honestly I have to know why you need a machine to do it. |

Chips: 14,462 | | Any idea how long that would take with 1100 chips??? MANY hours and tired hands/sore fingers when you're done. Remember you have to cover the edges as well as the faces and into the mold as well, that's alot of rubbing.

Anyway, you've had all weekend, did you try a mister or spray bottle? Report back! |

my chip oiling machine, so far no problems with wear and tear on the chips, i put 1 table spoon of oil in the holder and filled it half with plastic 6mm bb's i let it run for approximately an hour and a half, while i went and did other things, the oil got into all the nooks and crannies fine, so all i had to do was wipe them off good with a towel, if i get time I'll try and come up with a way to just load up the pre-oiled chips into the other barrel and fine some kind of medium to dry or wipe off the excess oil.
Update after using my machine, I've found out it really isn't necessary to wait, hardly anytime at all, five minutes for 60 chips is fine, just enough oil on them to do the job. also adding a bit more oil helps coat the chips better! |

Chips: 1,161 | | | When I oiled my first set of 800 chips (Trademark "classics"), I did them one at a time with a cloth and it took forever.
When I got my 1000+ Pharoah's, I got them done in almost no time at all. (I received them Friday after work, went to a party, came back and by Saturday morning they were done...and I didn't stay up all night!)
Here's my new approach.
1) Using a large table
2) Lay a towel across the table (beach towels are big)
3) Lay the chips next to each other on the towel
4) Using a small paint roller, put the oil on the roller
5) Roll the chips so that the chips are wet, but not soaked.
6) Repeat 4 & 5 until all chips are oiled.
7) Let them sit for at least 5 minutes (more if you like)
8) Flip all the chips over
9) Repeat 4 thru 7
Now you have options, using a second towel
1) Wipe the chips down one by one, or
2) Wipe & drag the chips across the towel on the table before doing #1. This is my preferred method. It wipes a lot of oil off before using the "finishing" cloth.
Focus on getting all the oil off the label.
The chips can now be either put away, or layed out for some air drying. As far as I can tell, there's no real difference.
Of note, I found that the outer edges got oiled without having to do anything more. Either the roller touched them and/or the soaking in too care of them.
As I was finishing up, I thought that I should have taken pictures of the process for everyone, but it was too late. It was cool seeing all those chips layed side-by-side...almost better than big stacks...definitely different.
If you have questions about this method, let me know.
Michael

Chips: 2,046 | | | That's the best way by far as i can see, many chips done at once. Wish you had pics of you doing this, you know the saying, a pic is worth a thousand words.
I'm still going to try using my tumbler and see if i can dry the chips some how----reason being, that's time i don't have to spend with each chip, i can go do other things while the machine does the work for me, that is of course if this experiment works at all----having fun trying this out, so far the oiling part works, but not sure if i can get the desired result in drying the chips.
P.S.---You've got the best of it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
