Chips: 1,728 | | Put a couple of drops of mineral, or light machine oil (3 in 1), (or olive oil for all that matters) on a soft rag, wipe and/or rub chips lightly on each surface with rag. Renew oil on rag as application starts to appear light on chips. Wipe off any excess oil from chips. Others may have differing techniques. No specific process or order that it has to be done in, though I"m sure someone will come along and say that their way is the definitive way.
If you only have a few chips to do, you can just put a drop of oil on your fingers and use your fingers, wipe excess oil off of chip with a paper towel.
IF you like that nice tight grip that stacks of clay chips tend to exhibit when they are new, don't oil them.
Hint: casinos don't oil them, they just put the chips on the floor. Quote: |

Chips: 13,228 | | | I did the finger method on about 100 horseheads and found that the drop of oil would easily last for 5 or so chips. I've still got about 500 to do, so I'm going to try some other methods to speed up the process.

Chips: 94 | | Here are my before/after pics.
I used mineral oil. I placed my rag over the mouth of the bottle and very quickly tipped it upside down. I then made sure to rub the section of the rag soaked with oil around so that I would get it almost "just damp" with oil. Very little oil on the rag was key.
We then rubbed the chips with the rag, occasionally lightly re-oiling the rag.
My fiance was doing the oiling and sliding them over to me. I quickly rubbed the excess off with a clean rag and then left them in piles until we were all done so the oil could soak a little. It took us a little over an hour working quickly. |

Also, olive oil or any vegetable oil could get rancid and smell bad over time. Someone else on the board had a problem with this.
Baby oil is OK, since it's just mineral oil with some fragrance. I've seen (though I wouldn't use it) that some folks tried spoon oil (or salad bowl oil), which is mineral oil with some beeswax for sealing/protection. |

Saves all the time normally spent doing them one by one. |

Chips: 1,728 | | I've used several different oils. I wouldn't worry about the theoreticals with petrolium by-products, it doesn't seem to affect the chip. But there is that distinctive machine oil smell if you put the chip up to your nose. Neither olive or rapeseed (canola) oil has produced a rancid smell, again this may have been more theoretical speculation than actual practice. As you mentioned, baby oil is mineral oil, the only difference is a little fragrance added. I'm sure there are a number of oils that work just fine, including those that 'naturally' oil the chips in casinos. Quote: |
