i got my paulsons last night and decided i would put a little oil on a couple of them to see what they looked like. my girlfriend asked me why i needed mineral oil and if i could just use vegetable oil. good question.
i oiled a few chips with vegetable oil using the same methods mentioned for mineral oil. the dull dusty look is gone from the chips and they certainly look shinier. not sure if veg oil is bad or not.
thoughts?
Dude, vegetable oil is a huge mistake. I made the mistake of using it on a whetstone to sharpen my knife with, when I was out of gun oil( I was too lazy to go get more), and it got all gummy and nasty, and I couldn't ever get it off...ended up throwing the stone out. I wouldn't do that too any more chips if I were you.
Actually, any oil on a whetstone can be a mistake. Oil is for oilstones, water is for whetstones and ceramics. Diamonds and carbide honers can be used dry.
I just ordered some spoon oil. Can't wait to give it a try. I posted the link below where I bought it from. They use Paypal so I ordered from them. I'll let everyone know the results.
