i got my paulsons last night and decided i would put a little oil on a couple of them to see what they looked like. my girlfriend asked me why i needed mineral oil and if i could just use vegetable oil. good question.

i oiled a few chips with vegetable oil using the same methods mentioned for mineral oil. the dull dusty look is gone from the chips and they certainly look shinier. not sure if veg oil is bad or not.

thoughts?

I've always been told that vegetable oils could turn rancid since they are organic and degrade over time. I don't know if this would be the case with a small amount of oil on a poker chip.

i think that vegetable will not be a good idea over time, as it does get very rancid...i had a math book in grade school that got a little bit of veggie oil spilled on it, and, by the end of the year, it smelled so bad that they made me pay for a new book because it had to be discarded on account of the horrible stink...

just my 2 cents...

Oil before or after label?

I'm in on the ASM group buy and when I get my chips I'm going to add labels. Should I oil them before or after I put the labels on? Will the oil ruin the label after or prevent it from sticking before?

Thanks

That's a great question, and unfortunately I don't have any answer. All the commercial chips have their labels applied during the manufacturing process, so the labels are permanent.

You'll probably have to try it when you get the chips and labels.

To label before, I'd wipe the centers very well before applying a label, and let the sit overnight. I'd think this would be best, so I'd probably try this method first. But of course, the label might not stick very well if the surface was oily.

After the label was applied, I'd be hesitant to oil them if the label was ink-jet printed, or if it was a porous paper label. You certainly could test some oil on a few labels on the sheet, before you peel them off.

Good luck! Maybe the "label pros" on this board have better info.

Re: Oil before or after label?

It depends upon the material that you use for the label itself. But why do you want to put mineral/baby oil on the chips to begin with? If you want them for show, just put the mineral oil on the ones that you're going to photograph or scan. There's no real need to put oil on the chips if you're going to use them for their intended purpose (as chips), they'll pick up oils from people's hands as they're being handled. If you want to accelrate the process pass a bottle of hand lotion around the table.

It would be logical to put labels on first, then oil the chips.

I can't believe I left that portion entirely out. ops:
Probably best to wipe down the chips first, put labels on, then oil if desired. I would think that paoer labels would probably be pretty vulnerable to staining from the oil, even if they are sprayed since the oil would seep in from the sides if too much oil was used.

How about linseed oil or tung oil? Wonder how those would work?
