I'm a noob to this so I apologise for my ignorance. I picked up some Paulson Pharoahs but have only had the opportunity for a couple of games with them. I love them and they look great. I remember reading a couple of threads where people mentioned that in order to get the chips oiled they would just leave out bags of chips at their weekly game.
I wasn't sure if that was serious or not! I am hosting a game in two weeks, so my question is, should I buy chips. Before I was pretty anal about not letting people get crap on my chips.

It's really up to you. Chips over time will get nicely broken in. I didn't oil my cash game chips and they've now got a great patina from being actually played with. If you want to actually oil them, and not let some grubby friends get their hands all over them, go ahead and wipe a small amount of mineral oil from a rag onto the edges of the chip. Let them dry overnight and you're good to go!

Yeah, I don't think you should to oil the home Paulsons. They seem to be less chalky than casinos and just shuffling them will get them there soon enough. Personally, I think the only time oil is appropriate is with brand new chalky chips (like BCCs & TR Kings), after a cleaning that dries them out, or with really old chips that are totally dessicated (seems to happen with older Paulson solids). My advice is to oil a few chips and then ask yourself if the result is worth the hours it will take you to oil them all.
IMO oil looks good, but it is tacky and picks up gunk even when used sparingly. I avoid it if possible. Oh, and to answer your question, your instinct is correct - vegetable oil from potato chips is a terrible idea. It will go rancid and cling and stink. Mineral oil only.
