What to do with these ASM'S? **** UPDATE W/ DYED ASMS on O.P ***

So a while back I won an auction for 110 Square in circle mold ASM chips.

I saw what I bought and thought I'll take a chance. The chips are canceled with an ink stamp of a salmon logo. Each chip has an elk lodge hot stamp on them.

The chips are pretty dirty.

Now the thing is, I know that these chips are good for something, I just can't figure out how to get them to a usable state.

I would love to get the cancellation stamp off and possibly one day label them.

I tried using nail polish remover, alcohol, soap and water. Nothing works.

Need some help with this problem. I'll take any advice right now.

Here's the set with cream and purple colored chips:

Here is the hot stamp on each chip:

Here is my attempt and the best I can do to remove the cancellations:

So yeah......I need some help.

Do you think dying these chips would be alright to do?

Oh and would any one know the history of these chips???

================================================================================================================================

I brought some life back into the ink stamp asm chips posted above. For now I just experimented on a couple chips, but will soon continue to dye the rest. So if it hasn't been stated before, yes folks you can dye clay chips.

I used the simple dying technique that was posted in chiptalk. Basically, water, vinegar, boil with rit dye color, place chip in for half and hour, wash off with cold water, dry for an hour. Boom revived asm's

I used a mixture of royal blue and kelly green rit dye to get the shade of blue I wanted which is like an obsidian color. I used the same chip that I posted above. The dark shade hides the ink stamp pretty well. The hot stamp was already faded so the dye completely covered it.

The next set is a a shade of green. I can never find someone selling 8 FUN nite chips. All I need is 8 fun nite green 25's, So I figure I'll try to create the shade. It's slightly successful, but I'm not satisfied with the shade. Plus you can see the ink stamp. The hot stamp is visible as well due to the fact that the hot stamp was not previously faded before dying. I placed an original fun nite next to it for comparison, I think it needs more of a yellow tone in it.

Here are some other shots I took:

I had some extra Greek key asm's hanging around so since I am now a dying freak, I threw it with the sample set. I placed a blue dyed chip next to an original for comparison.

So in conclusion, dying clay is possible. Rit dye help me solve my problem a bit. The chips turned out fine, no warping of the chips, they stayed flat, no color transfer yet. It's going to take a while to get them all in order. I will post the set when I'm done dying (sounds very morbid)

Hhhmmm...black ink is a tough thing to get out of anything it can soak into, there may not be a real clear cut way to get these off without damaging the chip. If you can't get the stamp off you can always use them for specialty chips (rebuy, bounty, etc).

Re: What to do with these ASM'S???

the black ink has probably soaked in and will not be removable without wearing down the chip. I would actually consider dying the chips black faux clay style.

Re: What to do with these ASM'S???

I had an ink-on-chip problem too, and the only way I could successfully get it off was to scrape it off, taking a bit of clay material with it.
That's not really an option in your case, obviously, so I would go with the suggestion of dying the chips in black color.

Re: What to do with these ASM'S???

Perhaps one possibility may be to use hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the pigment.... that is if it's an organic dye stamped on the chips. You can buy peroxide (oxygenated water) in your local pharmacy. Not sure what effect it may have on your chips though, so use caution.

Re: What to do with these ASM'S???

I know dying faux clay works well, but what about real clay chip? Can Rit dye penetrate well enough to get great results? Has anyone on this board ever dyed real clay chips? I might to this as an example for the board to follow, what to do and not to do.

I'm going to sacrifice one chip and try paint thinner. I know it's blasphemous to do this, but it's the last straw before I go onto either giving up and saying "F**K it an ink stamp isn't so bad", or dying the sons of Bi***s.

BTW, I always wondered about the dyed faux clay.....is there any color transfer? Like eventually over time does the dye rub off, or transfer onto your hands or the table during play?

Another thing, anyone know the history behind these chips or maybe a hint on elk lodge asm chips?

Re: What to do with these ASM'S???

Paint thinner will most likely discolour the plasticizer used in the chips, and with the amount of plasticizer that ASM chip have, I highly doubt that a dye would properly permeate uniformly into the chips.

I'd start with the seller for that info. Would guess that's a good starting point for information of that sort.

What about just a nice big label? all you would see would be a bit of the stamp on the outer ring.
