TSP chip cleaner: Danger Will Robinson!!!

Warning Warning Warning

I used this stuff as described (maybe a little stronger - I didn't measure) and let the 20 of the Nevada molds from the recent GB soak for 30 min. This is a little long, but typical of what I do with diamond chip cleaner.

It dissolved the chips. I'm serious - it dissolved the chips. Interestingly a single Freddies Paulson showed no damage at all.

Be very careful. Pics to follow.

Re: TSP chip cleaner: Danger Will Robinson!!!

The pics don't show the detail. The surface of the chips just melted. It took the dirt right off. Ditto the mold. Very bad. Not good.

I urge you to use test chips and be very carful before you put high dollar chips in this stuff.

Re: TSP chip cleaner: Danger Will Robinson!!!

I would imagine that there are a lot more chips out there with cleaning damage that no one is admitting.

The Nevada molds are made by ASM, right?

I've had similiar experiences with oxi clean. The paulson chip withstood the solution but the asm started to dissolve. I will definitely dilute the tsp before trying any higher concentrations on any chips.

I'm pretty sure ASM warns you not to soak their chips.

Re: TSP chip cleaner: Danger Will Robinson!!!

Perhaps the lead material in Paulson does make a difference vs the non-lead materials in ASM (see the forum article on ASM, "Interview with Jim Blanchard...".)

If lead is used as a shield against "Kryptonite" or harmful X-rays, maybe it's also a good shield against TSP.

Re: TSP chip cleaner: Danger Will Robinson!!!

When I cleaned my Nevada mold chips I let them soak for 20 minutes. Did them in batches of 100. I used a mixture of dawn dishwashing soap and some bleach. One batch was in for 30+ minutes and the surface of the chip didn't feel any softer than if it had be in for a couple of minutes. I'm glad I didn't try TSP, losing the surface of the chips would have sucked. Sorry for your loss, will you be giving them a funeral?

Fortunately only 20, and only white (I have extras). I try to be cautious with new things, so I didn't really loose any chips I really needed.
