A post on this forum states that ASMs only need oil on the rolling sides (or at least that this is what you get if they are pre-oiled). Is this the general consensus?
Also: Can anyone share experience with getting chips pre-oiled from ASM? How do you get this/what does it cost? Is it good enough?
Tell Cathy you are a Chiptalk member and they will oil the edges for free. I haven't received ASMs since finding this forum, so in the past I oiled them myself.
The darker colors like black and chocolate benefit from oiling the face. There will be dust all over the chip, so even if the oil doesn't penetrate the face like it does the edge, the oil will still help clean the face and give it a deeper look.
Go lightly with an oiled rag across the face and wipe off the excess after just a half-minute or so to keep the oil from getting into the inlay (I've had this happen a few times). I put an old sock on the table, oil it up, and brush the faces of 20 chips across the sock. By the time I'm to the end of the stack, the chips at the bottom (that were oiled first) are ready to be dried. Again, work quickly so the inlays aren't in jeopardy.
I tried the same technique with lighter colors (red and dayglo) and the oil didn't make much of a difference.
I oiled the entire chip in my asm set, I'm glad I did. Really brought out the colors and let them shine. Do go light on the oil though, a little goes a long way.
