Chips: 812 | | | When to Oil chips? How do you know when to oil chips? I have the feeling that some of my St. Jos need oiling as the colors are dull compared to newer chips and they tend to feel very dry and rough, almost brittle. What signs do i look for that it's about time to oil them?
Another side question, why do the grand inlay (such as PNY, not sure about inlay nomenclature) chips seem to hold oil better? I have not seen a dry grand inlay chip or maybe i have not been around long enough. |

If you are using your chips, you don't need to oil them. Just have some potato chips or chicken fingers on the table next time right next to your poker chips and they will get plenty of oil. |

Chips: 896 | | | Re: When to Oil chips? It can make them collect more grime after having been oiled. Oil tends to do that. Definitely don't oil them if they're not dry and chalky. That would be the only time to do so. Instead though, play with them. Quote:

They were pretty dry after cleaning and the oil worked very well imho. |

Sort of a natural oiling. 99%evil oiled some T-mold blanks one time and they were sweating oil all over the place. I personally just prefer to shuffle them and play with them to dust off the chalk and bring the colors out.

Chips: 10 | | | Re: When to Oil chips? Some chips just seem much better oiled. I recently purchased a set of Samurai Palace chips and, after being oiled, the colour really popped out and they felt less brittle.
I also have Paulson Pharoahs which I oiled. I don't think they really needed it but I did anyway.
Both chips have inserts that the oil can't really get behind. If your chips have a paper type insert, I would be more careful.
I think if you do oil, you have to be smart about it. The Samurai Palace chips are the same as the T-molds and my chips don't ooze oil. There is a link somewhere on here showing oiling using a circular foam shoe-polisher. I bought two for $3 and they worked fantastic.
1. Dip it in oil (lightly);
2. Spin it on the surface of the chip;
3. Wipe off the excess;
4. Flip over and do the other side;
5. Place in a towel in rows and roll the towel over;
6. Let them sit over night
