You don't need to put them oil for even 5 seconds. Just wet a wash cloth with oil and wipe the chips with it. New paulsons don't even really need to be oiled, maybe just hold a stack and wipe the edges down. You don't need to soak any chips in oil though.

It did however, become obvious that this would be a very time consuming process with large sets of chips but in my opinion, well worth it. Sidepot Clay Poker Chips has probably the best information I have ever seen on everything one could possibly want to know about chips.
Just put 50 chips at a time in an empty potatoe chips bag and shake it for a few seconds.
But seriously, the vegetable oil will go rancid and you'll have rancid chips. Stick with the mineral oil!
I did oil some NPS chips and had some dark spots under the inlay (I soaked the chips that had this problem) but those spots have gone away now and everything is fine.
I know there was a winking emoticon in the post about potato chip bags, but please don't make jokes like that in a new poster's thread. It's not immediately apparent that this is NOT what you do to oil chips to newbies who are honestly asking for advice.
